4 Days of tasting wines between Sonoma and Napa Valley. I'm not a big fan of Napa Valley wines usually, but thought it would be fun to go and relax
Had not heard of Laurel Glen before, but was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the product across the board. Great Cabernet Sauvignon and a steal of a price for North Coast Cab
Great tasting overall with a super friendly and knowledgeable staff. Fun to get to try 2 vintages of the reserve Cabernet next to each other. After tasting here I understand why the I-Block is so legendary!

Tasted at the winery.
Strong nose of stone fruit (peaches, apricots), very floral, jasmines and honeysuckle, hint of yogurt. No green notes that I could find. Shocked that this is 100% SB. Medium acidity and M+ body with a little vanilla showing through on the palate. Nice wine, but a little flatter than I like my SB, I prefer the crisp ones.

Fun to taste this next to the "Harvest of Joy" This has a touch higher acidity and much more tropical fruit. A lot of tropical fruit in fact, pineapple, guava, citrus all over the place. Obvious signs of oak are a bit distracting also. No noticeable green notes on this wine also

This was a wow of a wine for me. I've never been a huge fan of "Fume Blanc", I often feel like the oak hides what makes SB so special, but this is something different altogether... Tropical fruit on the nose, pineapple, melon, meyer lemon, guava, with just a hint of pea shoots. M+ Acidity which is perfectly balanced with a hint of vanilla, like a lemon chiffon cake.
I could have sat and drank this all afternoon, this was one of my top white wines I've had in years, just so much going on, yet at the same time it is not flashy, just balanced and happy...

Single vineyard wine from Stanley Ranch Vineyard
Nice earthy nose with hints of potting soil and beets. Nice fruit profile as well with raspberry and cherries, but does not come off sweet, much more of a balance with the earthy notes. Lightly floral as well, lilac and violet, but more of a secondary aroma. M- to Low in tannin, very soft with M+ Acid. Nice wine, perfect for food, and a nice change of pace in the world of Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon heavy blend with a good size dose of Cab Frac also. Tasted at winery
Fruit forward with a lot of Dark red and Black fruits, Black cherries, Blackberry and boysenberry. Does show notes of violets as well, but really fruit driven
Very smooth and easy tannins, full bodied but comes off very soft also. enjoyable now, but does not seem to be built to age.

Very disjointed, little funk and earthy notes, but also had a ton of bright red fruit, like a cherry jolly rancher, strawberry, cranberry and blackberry... Not my favorite

I was a big fan of this wine. On the nose the oak shows through with hints of smoke and clove, but it is very well integrated already. Very dark fruit profile, but balanced out by the earthy aromas. Briar, oregano, even black olive tapenade, so earthy that it reminded me of Syrah in a way. M+ Tannins, M+ Acid, tannins are still very tight and this needs more time still. This was my favorite Napa Valley Cab of the trip, but I'm not a fan of the big fruit style, so no surprise... In 20 years this will be beautiful

Just had a small sample of this wine, so notes not as in depth.
Overall, much more fruit forward than the 11, but to me comes off 1 dimensional, if you like big fruit, you would like this, but I preferred the 11... Not a bad wine, and actually much better than many we tried on this trip, but not my style

Was not overly impressed by these wines, many showed sweetness and were 1 dimensional

Nose came off strange, may be flawed. Pomegranate, raspberry, plum also almost a rubber component, which lead to my belief of a flaw. Tannins do not seem to be in balance either, not a fan

Tart nose of cranberry and currant. 1 dimensional. The palate this came across very young, tannins were elevated and acid was medium. Once again, not bad, but just fruit, fruit and more fruit...

Slightly herbal nose with some black and blue fruit. Plum, blueberry and blackberries. I enjoyed the herbal nose on this. The tannins are still very tight and dusty, not as in your face, should develop nicely over the next 5-10 years

On the nose, dark chocolate, cinnamon, cherry, raspberry and boysenberry. So much oak! It was distracting on the nose, just vanilla, clove, you name it... Just OAK.
That being said when it hit the palate it came together, High tannins, but they hit late and linger, for literally 2+ minutes you can taste them. M+ Acid as well with High alcohol. This is full throttle Napa Cab, and it is very well done. Should age well

The Hall wines and Walt wines were all very well made, and full throttle big fruit forward wines. As I said very well made, but not my favorite style

Let me start by saying I am not a fan of the big, high alcohol Chardonnays common in California.
This was a beast, vanilla, yogurt, M Acid... Pineapple, bruised apples and pears. Just so over-ripe... This made Rombauer taste like a light balanced wine...

Cola, black fruit with a little earthiness. VA seemed a little higher than expected, but could add great depth if it comes together. Big for Pinot, but in the California style. More mushrooms and earth on the palate. A touch hot on the palate too for me, but should settle down, still young

Very pretty nose of red and black fruits with a good amount of floral notes too. I really liked the nose on this. The palate everything is elevated to high, tannins, acid, body you name it, just bam! Needs to settle down, but shows some great depth on the nose which I hope comes through better on the palate in the future. Could be a great wine for the price if it settles

Once again very pretty nose.
My notes are almost identical to the North end Cab, but this had more to it. Floral nose, pomegranate, dark cherry. Slightly more earthy, but very pretty. On the palate once again High everything, and slightly hot. Needs about 10-15 years to settle...

Black fruit, blackberry jam, blueberry pie, vanilla, clove, cinnamon, a ton of fruit and a ton of oak... The palate the alcohol does not show through with so much else going on... Like the other Hall wines this needs time, but this should come together to just be beautiful...

I loved these wines across the board. They were fruity and earthy across the board, not a bad wine in the bunch. Also was my favorite tasting room experience. Tasting multiple vintages of the Cab, tasting a horizontal of their Pinot Noirs next to each other, just awesome!
(5/12/2017)
So floral right off the nose. Could smell potpourri from across the table. Peach, honey-suckle, apricot. The fruit smells ripe, but not over the top. The palate is creamy and full, but not vanilla and oaky, just full bodied fruit. On the palate many of the notes are confirmed, but also shows a hint of lemon verbena and mango. Very pleasant big bodied white wine.

Blend of three different vineyards. Not anywhere near as in your face as many of the Chardonnays we've tried on this trip. Lemon, apple, pear. M - M+ acidity keeps it balanced. Hint of cinnamon toast crunch. Shorter finish than I would have liked, but a great chardonnay, which did show some oak, but also balanced out beautifully

Was lucky enough to try the 3 different Flanagan Pinot Noir next to each other all form the 2014 vintage.
Red fruit driven with Cranberry, cherry, mushroom, and some brush herbs like thyme. Drinking very well right now with the highest level of acidity between the three, at least it appears that way... Fruit is present, but not sweet tastign like many of the other pinots tasted on this trip...
Very nice wine, but all of their Pinot were beautiful...

A ton of inorganic earth, mineral, wet stone, slate? Cherry and Berry on the nose, but defiantly not fruit driven. Slightly funky in the best way possible. My favorite of the three Pinots from Flanagan. M Tannins and great acidity makes me believe this will live on 10-20 years...

On the nose has a good amount of Berry, cherry, currant and cranberry. The most fruit driven of the 3, but still very well balanced. Shows a hint of oak, but adds to the wine without taking over it. Everything is perfectly balanced in this wine, just so smooth. My wife's favorite of the 3

Licorice, fennel and boysenberry syrup on the nose. Black fruit driven, but also with the age it has moved into the date, molasses stage too. M+ Tannins, M acid. Drinking beautifully right now, but I would drink up in the next few years. The finish on this wine lasts for 2-3 minutes, just endless

Fun to taste this next to the 2009 from the same fruit. Fresh and popping with black and red fruit. Blackberry, plum and more boysenberry, just like the older one. Clove, vanilla and allspice show through from the oak, I believe this will integrate well, just like the 2009 had. Also a hint of something herbal, maybe oregano?
Needs to settle, open in 3-5 years...

This is the top bottling from Flanagan, 80% Cab S and 20% Merlot
Oak is showing heavily on the nose, smoke, allspice, clove, etc... Fruit comes through too, blackberry, plum, black cherry. Hint of menthol and eucalyptus, which I love in Cab! Also had a slight caper note, possibly from a slight amount of VA... So tight on initial pour, but left to sit for 15 minutes and it started to come to life. Needs a long decant currently but should hold up to aging gracefully
Compared to other Flanagan Reds it is hard to justify the higher price, but compared to Napa Valley Cabs this is a steal and out performs almost all of them at a lower price.

Estate Merlot from Bennett Valley property
Blue fruit driven, blueberry pie, plum and more. Good amount of acidity keeps it from coming off jammy. I'm not a fan of Merlot, but this is a good full bodied red

Floral and black fruit driven on the nose, great herbs coming through too, rosemary, thyme, black pepper is noticeable too. Light and playful nose that is also full at the same time, absolutely beautiful! Fruit goes purple on the palate, boysenberry (I got boysenberry from a lot of their wines, especially from the Bennett Valley Estate) Plum and M+ Tannins. My wifes favorite and this walks between the old and new world perfectly. High alcohol like a new world, but so much more than just fruit which often overpowers NW Syrah. Could pair with a variety of foods, even something like a simple roast chicken with herbs...

Once again was not familiar with the brand heading in but pleasantly surprised. The Entry level cab is a steal for Northern California

Dark red and black fruit profile. Oak shows through slightly with hints of vanilla and clove. Cherry, licorice and a hint of fennel on the palate to go with the fruit profile.
Very nice and a great value in North Coast Cabernet

Reserve level Cabernet, Blackberry, cherry, boysenberry and ripe plum. Dark in color and flavor as well, less herbal notes than the regular bottling and much more fruit. M+ tannins that still need time to settle, Oak shows through on this too, but not out of balance. Very nice wine, but for my money I prefer the regular bottling, but this is much more of a Napa style which is not my favorite often...

Great Pinot Producer I had heard of, but had very little experience with. Across the board great wines! Also got to try the 2014 Gunsalus Pinot Noir "Methode Ancestrial" I could not find in Cellartracker, but it was great and built to age a long, long time.
(5/13/2017)
No in-depth notes were taken, but a nice smooth strawberry fruit driven rose

Light in color and body, but not flavor. Cranberry, bright cherry fruit and pomegranate on the nose, along with a great organic earth side like roasted mushrooms and forest floor. 50% New Oak, but it balances out because it has so much flavor to combat it. M- Tannins and M+ Acidity. This was drinking beautifully, curious to see how it ages...

Compared to the Sadie Pinot Noir from Talisman this has more noticeable oak, smoky on the nose with a hint of vanilla. Very red fruit driven, strawberry and cherry. Nice wine, but I preferred the earthier Sadie.

Very pretty floral nose on this wine, roses and violets maybe even a hint of lilac? Dark fruit profile than the first 2, moving into the black fruit profile, Black cherry and pomegranate. Oak shows thought just slightly and should integrate beautifully. Bold flavors, yet still feminine and funky, my favorite of the bunch from Talisman

Light in color and flavor, great acid and red fruit driven. Not a bad wine, but kind of boring next to the other Talisman Pinots

I wish I took better notes, but we were in a hurry here. They were the most unique winery of the trip. An Orange wine, yes please! How about a Zinfandel made in the Noveau Style with only around 12% alcohol, why not! Honestly a lot of fun, and some very good wines. Worth a stop just for the change of pace, but also the wines are nice and very fairly priced
(5/13/2017)
Light and fairly acidic, even for SB. Very green profile of jalapeno and asparagus. Also had Guava and Grapefruit. Reminded me so much of a New Zealand SB which was a nice change on the trip.

Extremely floral, lilac and lavender. Very, very delicate wine that did an amazing job being light, yet also full of flavor. Red fruit but really earth driven, both potting soil and stones... Never thought of Benzinger as a Pinot producer, but this was beautiful and had an incredibly long finish

CS heavy Bordeaux Blend from Mountain fruit.
Black and red fruit, but driven by great gravel and mineral notes also. Wonderful combination of old and new world that kept me coming back for more. Should age effortlessly for a long, long time. Those of you looking for big California fruit may not be happy, but I loved it...

I had not tasted Laurel Glen before coming here and I was very pleasantly surprised. Great fruit, but also a lot of graphite and hints of oak, but already starting to integrate. Not a fruit bomb, but enough to let it age gracefully. Tried 3 vintages next to each other and was nice to see they hold up so well.

2009 Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Sonoma Mountain
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain
(5/10/2017)
Of the 3 vintages I tried (2013, 2009, 2006) this was the least fruit focused. A lot of graphite, leather, potting soil. Oak still showed, but was not over powering. Tannins are still quite tight, this can survive a while still, but drinking nicely now. Black fruit shows through but earth notes really dominate this wine... My favorite of the bunch

2006 Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Sonoma Mountain
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain
(5/10/2017)
Perfectly balanced 1/2 fruit driven, half earth. Great balance. The tannins have softened and drinking well right now. Touch of menthol too. Fruit profile straddles between red and black with strawberry, raspberry and almost a blackberry... Very nice wine also, I would drink now or within the next 2-3 years... This is drinking best of the 3 currently, but I love the earthiness of the 09. That being said you can't really go wrong with any of them.
All of the Laurel Glen Cabernets were great, and I preferred them to any of the Cabs we had in Napa the next day...
