Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1983 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Brune et Blonde

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

First bottle of the evening, from Bob's cellar. Cork took some effort but came out whole. Decanted and drank slowly over the evening.

Faded garnet, significant fading at the edge. Nose was a bit funky at first, picked up barnyard, spice, cedar, earth. Palate was tart red fruits, cedar, savory, mushrooms. This bottle past its prime, fruit was faded and the funk stayed around for a long time. Finsh was medium

  • 2003 Staglin Family Cabernet Sauvignon Premiere Napa Valley

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

From Bob's cellar, nice to try an nicely aged PNV wine. Splash decanted and drank over the course of the evening.

Dark, inky purple color, fair amount of sediment. Big nose of dark berries, oak and earth. Rich palate of dark berries, blackberry, vanilla oak, spice. A little heat on the back palate. Rich finish.

Classic CA Cab, the style at the time was a bit more "full throttle". As this style ages the heat is coming through more as the fruit is maturing. Still very nice, Staglin wines for me are consistently good. I think this is best to drink over next few years.

  • 2012 Castalia Wines Pinot Noir Rochioli Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

I brought as a contribution to the evening. Bob liked some of the bright new world pinots we had in the past.

From prior notes: "Medium, bright ruby color. Clean and translucent. Incredible nose of red raspberry, savory notes. Expressive and fruit forward palate showing bright red fruits, ripe strawberry, bing cherry, black raspberry, picked up some caramel, burnt sugar on back palate..."

This was nice to drink over the evening, it continued to evolve showing nice secondary flavors, aromatics continued to change. Really nice wine, right in its zone

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This one had been in my cellar for a while, bought at auction several years back. I have had great recent experience with the 90 Bdx in my cellar. Cork came out clean, splash decanted, open for about 20 minutes prior to drinking. Paired with an awesome Porterhouse and veggies.

Core color is a fading purple/garnet. Nose was great right away - dark fruits, graphite/pencil, leather and violets. Silky smooth palate showing black raspberry, currant, black olives, earth and floral. A lot going on here, nuanced through the mid and back palate.

A classic wine from a classic vintage, drinking at full maturity right now. This was a truly incredible wine this particular evening. Based on this bottle, the wine still has a healthy drinking window ahead of it...(10+ years maybe?) Sadly, my last bottle. This one worth the freight if stored well. WOTN

  • 1995 Château Calon-Ségur 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Followed the Pichon Baron with this one from Bob's cellar. He was remarking how the 1995s in his cellar were not showing as well as expected, we thought this one may redeem the perception. Splash decanted and drank over an hour.

Dark garnet/purple color though the core, mild separation. Nose showing dusted red fruits, plum, tobacco graphite and stones. Smooth palate of dark cherry, cassis, black olives, sous bois...Tannins resolved and fined. Medium finish

May have needed more of a decant than we afforded it. In a good spot right now, but I think it's at its best over the next 3-5 years. Does not seem as if it will continue to evolve.
