Dinner at Siggy's House

Introduction

Steve invited Chris and I over for dinner on Sunday night. I had been camping all weekend and had to rush home, shower quickly, double decant the Telegraph, and then rush over to Steve's. Despite my urgency I was still over an hour late. Thankfully they saved some wine for me. Dinner was excellent and the conversation was a good as always.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 89 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

Notes from memory. The color was an orange-hued pink. The nose was mildly expressive with mineral and fresh fruit. The taste is very interesting -- totally dry and much more structured than I would have expected. Good minerality with a steely cranberry/pomegranite fruit. Decent length on the finish. A very interesting rose. I would expect this to improve a bit in the next 6-12 months.

  • 2002 Kongsgaard Chardonnay 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Notes from memory. This showed much better than the 2001 Siggy served last time I was over. The nose was very enticing. Some oak was present but it seemed in balance. The taste was deep, rich, and expansive. Good concentrated fruit with enough nuance to stay interesting. Good balance. Nice long finish. A very good chardonnay.

  • 1987 Dr. Zenzen Valwiger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese * 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

No notes taken. Really a nice bottle of aged Riesling. The nose has an expressive blend of fresh fruits and mineral. This has impressive weigth on the palate and is very well balanced. Excellent flavor intensity. To demonstrate this I inadvertently mixed a fresh pour with my sparkling water. The flavor of the wine was still impressive. The unadulterated version of the wine worked very well with Steve's pork tenderloin.

  • 2000 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Notes from memory. Served blind. The nose was an undistinguishable blend of red and black fruits, with not much else going on. The taste was lean and amazingly tannic -- and the tannin really obscured the taste from mid-palate through the finish. All aspects seemed a bit flat and closed down. I jokingly guessed Tannat as the grape before I settled for a guess of a recent vintage Washington State Cab. Chris indicated that this was much more expressive upon openning and had closed up tight in the decanter. Not rated.

  • 2000 Domaine Pontifical Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Notes from memory. Served blind. The nose was more expressive than the Cuvee Vatican giving dark fruit with smoke, pepper, and I would say some oak. The taste was quite a contrast to the Cuvee Vatican as this showed slightly fat -- with plenty of red fruit, oak, and carmel. Great texture, good balance, and decent lenght on the finish. I guessed the grape as Syrah, and figured the fatness to be New World. Wrong again.

  • 2000 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Notes from memory. Double decanted about two hours before serving. The color was a deeper and darker red than the other two CdPs served. I found the nose decent but a little wild -- a lot going on with no smells distinct enough to lock in on. Let's just say dark fruit, garrigue, and mineral. The taste had good fruit concentration but still came across as a very structured wine. The finish was decent. I have trouble seeing the resemblance to the 85, 88, and 94 tasted recently. An upper 80s effort on this night, but should develop into a low 90s wine (or even higher) with additional bottle age.

  • 1998 M. Chapoutier Côte-Rôtie La Mordorée 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

No notes taken. Popped and poured. The color was a deep and youthful red -- almost black. The nose was more expressive than the last bottle I had giving sweet red cherry with tobacco, tapenade, and smoke. The taste was extremely smooth and seductive despite showing obvious structure.

  • 2003 Château Suduiraut

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

No notes taken. My second run at this (thanks to Siggy). Possesses a soaring nose dominated by apricot, honey, and lavendar -- but with other aromas in reserve. On the palate this is thick and luxurious. I'd call it balanced, but it could probably use a touch more acidity. The finish is very long. Needs more cellar age but drinks great now.

Closing

I'd call the Chapoutier Mordoree as WOTN. None of the CdPs really did it for me.
