Tasted Friday, June 1, 2007 by Hank Gillespie with 1,384 views

Introduction

This tasting was conducted by Dottore Sebastiano Rosa, stepson of the Marquis Nicolo Incisa della Rochetta. He is a graduate of Enology & Viticulture from U.C. Davis, and has spent a year at Chateau Lafite Rothschild and 9 years as General Manager of Tenuta di Argiano in Montalcino. He is currently active at the Tenuta San Guido estate in all phases of the wine operations.

Sebastiano was in good form Friday morning, even after spending some time on the dance floor the previous evening at the BBQ. The Western band invited all comers to hit the floor for some lessons in Line Dancing.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2004 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

A blend of 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Sangiovese – making use of the younger vines from the Sassicaia vineyards. 15-20% new French oak barrels. 14.5% alcohol.
Fairly dark ruby in colour; aromas emphasize the berry fruit; well balanced – blackberry flavours – soft and easy on the palate; finishes well with the fruit carrying through over some underlying tannins.
This is a most attractive wine - drank it on Thursday night, and also with lunch following the tasting on Friday. It's not as deep or sophisticated as the Sassicaia but one can definitely see the influence of the winemaking.

  • 2000 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Much darker than the previous wine – a wider pink rim; aromas needed coaxing – scented and penetrating dark berries and spice; full bodied and quite powerful on the palate; rich blend of currant and black cherry – edge of ground pepper; acute tannins lying beneath the fruit; huge coating of the palate; long, round finish with substance in the fruit.

  • 1999 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Fuzzy dark ruby – wide rim; fragrant , medley of kitchen spices, some smoke, actually fairly pungent, then the fruit begins to show; mellow, rich texture; strong berry fruit, more blackberry than anything else, builds on the palate, flowing attractively into a lengthy finish. Some considerable elegance here.

  • 1998 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Amber edge on the rim – dark ruby center; dark fruits dominate the aromas – complexity – bouquet developing nicely with sweet Spring flowers, purity of black currant fruit dancing from the glass; round and balanced on the palate; all black currant fruit in the flavours; excellent concentration and depth; extremely long and agreeable finish, with the tannins peeking through. Some time to go with this wine.

(Magnum) – Medium ruby colour, with a wider rim of amber; warm, penetrating bouquet – secondary sells of dried petals, herbs, spice, cigar box cedar, tobacco and mocha, with a core of ripe blackberry; supple on the palate with ripe fruit – baked cherry pie, with the deep black currant riding over, and extending to a long pleasing finish. Superb !
