Mirabelle - Washington, DC
Tasted Friday, October 27, 2017 by Burgundy Al with 521 views
Dense apple and pear. Lots of acid to start, then fruit expanding and opening with more air. Mineral intensity start-to-finish. Very long finish. Started out 92 points when first poured (only open 45 minutes), but 95 points when finished 3 hours later.

Rich for Chablis with great good concentration. Less complex to start, more air brought forth more nuance, but this was never as fun as the MdT 2005 on its right or as powerful as the Valmur 2007 on its left.

Open just 30-45 minutes before serving. Open and accessible from the start, this was big, robust, powerful and very fun. At a great place already now. More fun than either vintage of Valmur alongside in the same flight.

Slightly floral start. Apple, lemon peel, orange peel, followed by a bit of honeycomb. HArmonious and balanced, even if not particularly powerful. Seemed like a very good 1er Cru Chassagne to me. Cepage is 50/50 blend of clairette and grenache blanc.

Massive and rich with tropical fruit and sweet spice. There is a lush sweetness that I find extreme and too extravagant, but understand others will love this wine.

Baked apple, ginger and lemongrass with pain perdu notes. Unctuous and rich. I haven't tasted this since shortly after release, and the fruit is less forthcoming, so I think this is entering its dormant phase, awaiting the brioche/ butterscotch complexity to emerge in another decade.

In top 2007 Bonnes Mares horizontal. Rich and ripe black and red cherry aromas with roasted meat spice. Similar flavors, also showing red cherry. Very dense, particularly for vintage. Very good already. Best showing ever for this wine. Very good now, with upside from here.

In top 2007 Bonnes Mares horizontal. Red and black cherry, coming across and dense, meaty and powerful. Ripe, but also somewhat backward finish. Not as charming or precocious as when last enjoyed shortly after release, but this will certainly reward more time in the cellar. 93 points today, 94+ potential.

In top 2007 Bonnes Mares horizontal. Red cherry and berry throughout, in a slighter and elegant style. Charming. Moderate weight and length. Very good now, and this should continue to drink well and evolve for the next 10-15+ years.

In 82/98/00 vertical. Mostly black currant and cherry with red fruit hints, plenty of earth and tobacco. Plenty of earthy, meaty spice with well cooked/ reduced mushroom. Very elegant, very long. Wow!

In 82/98/00 vertical. Black cherry and berry throughout. Great balance and very good weight. Just slightly less complex vs either the gorgeous 1982 or suggestive 2000.

In 82/98/00 vertical. Lush and rich start, but this quickly slammed shut with massive structure. Great power and concentration, but backward and just teasing us with its clearly great potential.

In Guigal 1990 "La La" horizontal. Enticing aromatic start with black cherry, sweet and savory spice and fatty hints. Similar flavors, just slightly less complex and powerful. Best to enjoy now.

In Guigal 1990 "La La" horizontal. Black cherry and plum with faint liqueuur hints. Great spice. Similar flavors, very long, almost perfectly balanced. While Turque had the best nose and Landonne the best flavors, this was the overall best of the horizontal.

In Guigal 1990 "La La" horizontal. Rugged aromas made this seem backward, but that was dismissed once tasted. Black cherry and plum with meaty character. Black pepper, licorice and clove spice notes. Very concentrated, very long. Best flavors of the horizontal, probably the on;y one of the three with upside from here.

In 98/01/05/06 vertical. The star of the flight. Mostly black cherry with some plum, red berry and liqueur hints. Good spice start-to-finish. Superbly elegant textures. So charming.

In 98/01/05/06 vertical. Started off slightly firm despite several hours of air. Riper aromas vs flavors at first, but overall more balanced and tasty after an hour in glass. Slightly disappointing.

In 98/01/05/06 vertical. Black cherry aromas and flavors with subtle spice, great balance and harmony. Very good freshness and length, just lacking the depth (for now?) of the 1998.

In 98/01/05/06 vertical. Very ripe, forward and fun. Very tasty, but not as complex as I might have hoped or recall from before.

Dark color. Dried apricot with sweet baking spice. Lots of botrytis, lots of complexity. Dense, long, very well balanced.

Dried apricot, caramelized pineapple, mango and dried coconut. So dense, so very long. Great now, so very energetic and exciting. This will last a generation or two.

Great underlying fruit, but that rare slightly corked Champagne.

1997 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points
France, Champagne
Rich and concentrated, but reasonably more mature vs other recent bottles. Certainly good, but probably not a perfect bottle.

2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne 93 Points
France, Champagne
Cross-section of apple aromas and flavors with some lemon peel. Comes across as very Chardonnay-driven. Very fresh, bight, long and powerful. Drinking well now, with upside from here.
