Introduction

Another good event and new member of this club Jason stole the show with his 1998 Clos des Papes. Certainly want to do more events in 2018 than the down year that was 2017.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2013 Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Blanc 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

This is drinking really well right now. Floral, apricots, stone fruit and a nice minerality streak on the finish. Balanced and well made. Drink now or hold a few more years. 54% Grenache Blanc, 25% Viognier, 13% Roussanne and 8% Marsanne.

  • 1998 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Wine of the night. Funk, underbrush, raspberries and floral notes. Classic CDP and had a few glasses over the course of 3 hours and there was no drop off on this one. While I would enjoy this now as it is peaking I could see 3 to 5 more years of cellaring without fear. Just an amazing, complex wine. Defiantly a better bottle than I have had prior to this as I never hated this wine but never loved it either. This is why I love Cellar Tracker to see how wines evolve and bottles vary.

  • 2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This was firing on all cylinders tonight. Huge wine but in a good way. Gravel, funk, red currants and Garrique. This was concentrated and a long finish. I have never had a Beaucastel that tasted like this and enjoyed this one more than any previous.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Celery, floral, underbrush and light fruits. Got better throughout the night but this underwhelmed. Good acidity. Decanted 3 hours and I wonder if 30 minutes would have been better.

  • 2003 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

My third favorite wine tonight. Floral, spice, juicy fruits and earth. While not an over the top wine it certainly had some power to it. Medium plus finish and this could go for another decade plus.

  • 2005 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Have not drank a lot of 2005 CDPs but this one improve throughout the night. Still a baby so hold. Modern style with lush fruit, cinnamon, spices and Garrique. Long finish. A heavy decant or open 2022 or later.

  • 2003 E. Guigal Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Decanted one hour. Blueberries, earth, chocolate, cherry and spice. Drinking well now or could see holding for a few years. While some thought it was bigger in style I didn't get that impression. Medium finish.

  • 2007 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Liked this one much better than the 07 Clos du Mont-Olivet. One hour decant. Tar, spice, red currants and floral notes. Quite balanced and medium finish. Not a powerful wine which is fine by me.

  • 2007 Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Least favorite wine of the night. Funny thing is it was the highest rated by critics. 2 hour decant. Big over the top offering. Forest floor, Garrique overload, ripe fruit. Heat is evident. Hold for ten years.

  • 2006 Château Coutet Barsac 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

This is not a bad wine but why I prefer a good Spatlese or Auslese. Lacked acidity and was a bit sweet with pineapple, peaches and orange peel.
