Rousseau and Coche. Bellecour, Wayzata, MN

A great dinner at Bellecour, with four lovely Rousseau and a trio of Coche Meursault. We were a group of four, and drank these over three hours. Crab and lobster with the Coche, and a brilliant cassoulet with the Rousseau.

• 2002 Coche-Dury Meursault

  For me, the 2002 showed a touch flat. Don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable, but it didn't provide excitement. The friend who brought it indicated it was consistent with other bottles from the parcel.

  Something was going on with this bottle, some kind of minor flaw that was keeping it from showing as well as expected. I'd love to try another and compare.

  To quote the TN from Xavier Auerbach (disclaimer, I don't know him): "It’s Coche, it’s Meursault and its 2012. And it is all of these things with effortless precision and ease." That says it perfectly. I'm really liking the 2012 whites for early drinking. So fresh, expressive, and wonderful.

  For some reason I don't recall tasting the 90 Beze previously. This was one sexy bottle, in perfect shape. Stunning, and showed all the positives of the vintage.

  As anticipated, a gorgeous bottle of 91 Beze. Fascinating to drink it side by side with the 90 as these are two amazing bottles.

• 1995 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin

  The 95 Chambertin outperformed my expectations. Unlike a bottle earlier this year, this showed a lovely combination of precision and hedonism. In steep company of three fantastic Beze, it held its own.

  I find Rousseau's 99's wonderful for current consumption, and not at all too early. This bottle was gorgeous, and its really not clear to me that it will get materially better. It's that good now. Decanted briefly at 3pm, then poured back into the bottle and opened at 7:30.
