France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie
Nose: The nose shows the age of the wine with some crisco, honey, and lemon curd notes as well as red apples, biscuits, and some mineral tones.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity still provides a spine with the feel showing some density with crisco, pears, honey notes, minerals, and red apples.
Overall: This is still there, but it's starting to turn more into a thought exercise. Still, it's fun to get a chance to try something like this to get an idea of how Muscadet ages.
Nose: The nose is immensely deep and expressive filled with baked apples, melon tones, biscuits, chalky tones, pears, yellow fruits, and a touch of stone fruits.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity is pronounced, but still balanced with the feel showing a richness and depth along with baked apples, biscuits, pears, and stone fruits.
Overall: This was drinking beautifully already. There is excellent weight and concentration to this that shows off the quality of Krug. This is a very successful 2003 that does show off some of the vintage, but it is extremely well made.
Nose: The nose is aromatic and balanced with pears, red apples saline, waxy notes, and wet stones. While there is good balance, it does lack some depth.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity is bracing, but refreshing with pears, red apples, saline, and waxy notes.
Overall: This is a standout Bourgogne Aligote. This shows excellent complexity for the grape with zesty acidity.
Nose: The nose is flowing and perfumed with sour red cherries, herbs, spices, cranberries, leather tones, and earth tones. The fruit still has ripeness to it, though it is clearly mature while there is excellent depth and layering.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium tannins. The feel and structure are showing mature with the acidity being a little on the sharp side. The feel is refined and polished with sour red cherries, herbs, cranberries, leather, earth tones, and black tea notes.
Overall: This is just drop dead gorgeous. There can certainly be some variation on these bottles and this was an on bottle.
Nose: The nose is highly aromatic and balanced with lychees, peaches, apricots, red apples, pears, and spice notes. There is excellent depth and intensity to the fruit with a richness to it as well.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity has some real punch to it and the feel is rich and textured with lychees, peaches, apricots, red apples and some spices.
Overall: This is drinking beautifully. It has the richness and density that one comes to expect from Hirtzberger and the botyrtis does come through. But, it's also perfectly balanced and fragrant with lots of class and depth.
