Introduction

Had a look at some new arrivals in the cellar via Coravin and also double checked the two wines I was going to take down to Wollongong for Gnocchi fun on the weekend

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

From Coravin. Lemon, fresh herbs, butter and toast. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy, generous, tangy with lemon butter, toast, long, compelling and, well, splendid.

  • 2006 Chanson Père & Fils Corton-Vergennes Blanc

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

From Coravin. Grapefruit is the dominant citric element backed by slight rocks over sour cream. Hmm. Quite rich and buttery but also slight sour and oxidised though it looks good colour wise in the dim storage light. Bit of alcohol warmth on the finish as well. not sure this is correct or might just need more time in the glass to open up. Benefit of the doubt today.

  • 2014 Domaine de Chevalier

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

From Coravin. Juicy red and black cherry and currant. Cedar and spice and slight cocoa powder. More of the same on the palate. Still la little austere with talc textured, slightly drying tannins backs the juicy, creamy textured fruit and oak flavours. Long. Time.

  • 2014 Château Léoville Barton

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Half bottle. From Coravin. Dense blackcurrant and spice with a little cream. Smells young and powerful. Tight, powdery tannic grip married to freshly squeezed blackcurrant and bramble juice. The palate is dry but the fruit persists with a touch of cedar. Medium plus length. Beautifully balanced. Yes, a little vinfanticide but lovely none the less. Yum.

  • 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Ripe plums, sweet spice and polished cedar married to earth, dried flowers and a little dusty spice. Juicy with tight, talc textured taninns over that ripe plum backed by a little plan chocolate. Feels quite modern and quite mature. Kind of nice

  • 2004 Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

From Coravin. Baked earth, pot pourri, roses and tar. A sour spiciness and sharp cherry on the nose with a slightly confected, high toned top note. It's more porty on the palate, the acidity a little subdued but the tannins are very present. Less well balanced, for me, that the Paulo Scavino and, perhaps, a little more traditionally made? Not sure I like this. Feels a little flat.

Closing

Couple of suspect wines marred an otherwise fun tasting…The Leoville Barton was really something else as was the Moreau Les Clos. Woof
