Introduction
The objective was to blind taste and find the portuguese tempranillo (aragones) and the argentine away from the spaniards.

The distinctive winners for me were the Protos Selección 01, the Pintia 01, and Bodegas Mauro Crianza 01. The portuguese was very easy to find and the argentine masked itself behind some very strong american oak.
2001 Bodegas Protos Ribera del Duero Selección 92 Points

The winner of the night. Very dark, dense, shiny rubi color. The complexity of the nose was the strongest aspect, everytime you came back it revealed something different. Toasted notes, black jamy fruit, very elegant. Great balance, the chewy tannins are in sinch with the fresh acidity and both leave and impressive long aftertaste that promises a great future for cellaring.

2001 Bodegas Pintia Toro Pintia 91 Points

Very dark, dense purple color. The nose is very complex, some floral notes, sweet vanilla, lot´s of fruit, very impressing. Tons of fine tannins, layers of fruit and a long lasting finish, very pleasant but still youg. Has very good potential for aging.

This tempranillo blend reveals a deep, dense rubi color. The nose is very complex and full of ripe fruit, some clear barn and game notes. It is powerful, muscular and has a very interesting combination of plenty and strong tannins with no bitterness although still youg. The lingering finish adds some more elegance to the overall presentation. Has very good potential for further aging.

2002 Familia Zuccardi Tempranillo Q 90 Points

Dark rubi color, the nose is very concentrated on american oak influence, sweet vanilla, toasted notes, seductive, ready. The palate reveals unctuos and polished tannins, a little extra acidity would be better as well as a little less oak. Good persistence, very pleasant.

The purpose of the blind tasting was to spot the portuguese and the argentine from the middle of the spaniards. This was an easy one. Not as dense and dark as the spaniards, this aragones has plenty of fruit but lacks complexity on the nose, acidity and structure on the palate. For me the loser of the night and very easy to distinguish from the pack.

Not a good show when compared to the others at the tasting. Not close in complexity, lacks acidity and a better structure. Past it´s time and short finish.
