Introduction

Old Cabernet Sauvignon and marinated Rib Eye Steak is a great combination.

Flight 1 - Trade Tasting of four new releases. (3 Notes)

2014 and 2015 releases to consider but did not buy.

  • 2015 Vino Godfather Tempranillo 84 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg

New release with a nose of burnt cinnamon, black cherry, and raisin, same on the palate, medium/big body, very young tasting, hint of soft tannins and dry wood on the mid palate, and a medium/long finish, take me back to the 2014 please.

  • 2014 Domaine Château De La Tour Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Nose of sweet and sour Pinot Noir, red and black cherry, allspice, and forest floor, same on the palate, medium/big body, tasty but needs six years in the cellar to show its best, everything is present on the palate but its youth hurts enjoyment, still the pedigree shows and will reward the patient, medium/long finish.

  • 2015 Vino Godfather Zinfandel Prohibition Old Vine Zinfandel 88 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma

Nose of juicy, black cherry, smoke, and allspice, same on the palate, medium/big body, almost fruit forward, decant or cellar for six months and should be enjoyable with little effort, tasty, touch simple, and a long finish.

Flight 2 - Great Cabernet Sauvignon 45 to 50 years old!!!!! (3 Notes)

Fabulous wine if well stored at 56 degrees for many years.

  • 1973 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 98 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red coloration in the glass showing hints of sediment, and the cork was pulled in one piece with sixty percent saturation. Nose of licorice, black cherry, red cherry, cooked orange rind, and violets, same on the palate, medium/big body, nose and taste were immediately present from the beginning and throughout the two hour lunch, mouth filling and rich fruit, obviously, the youngest of the three Cabernet Sauvignons enjoyed today, probably five years left to enjoy, a delicious showing for a forty-five year old Cabernet Sauvignon,, elegant fruit, a great bottle, a great Cabernet, and a great winemaker, with a long, long, flavorful finish and pleasant aftertaste.

  • 1968 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This bottle had a completely loose cork when opened. The result was a madeira like nose throughout the lunch, maybe off putting to some but certainly not objectionable to us, nose of stewed cherry pie, saddle leather, and forest floor, same on the palate, medium/big body, on the palate this was fresh, delicious, lovely fruit, because of the cork showing its age but still elegant and very tasty, with a long, long finish.

  • 1968 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 99 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Cork in one piece and completely saturated upon opening, nose of black cherry, black currants, very floral, and a promise of rich fruit, same on the palate, big body, almost massive body, when compared to the other two Cabernet Sauvignons today, it really delivered mouth filling and rich fruit, elegant, classy, kept getting better and better during lunch, old style flavors, we all agreed this was The Wine of the Tasting, had a long, long, flavorful finish and aftertaste, more sediment on the bottle sides and the bottom of the bottle than the other two wines. The four of us agreed on the order of the three wines but tasting notes and scores are entirely my own.
