This has a great bouquet immediately indicative of Northern Rhône with scorched earth and smoked meat. This has some lush purple fruit and currant. Brambly. On the palate this fruit is still intense and punchy although there is some developing sweetness at the edges. Impressed with the '87 flight overall. 92
This nose is terrific as well and has the same scorched earth and meat as the Landonne, but this has greater aromatic expression, if a touch sweeter in terms of the currant fruit. A lighter rusticity more indicative of Hermitage with acrylics and clay. On the palate this is in a great state of development with maturity and nuanced texture to the otherwise still vibrant blackberry and currant.
This nose is the quietest of the ‘87 flight. The earthy tones are subdued behind purple currant fruit that seems to be advancing at a faster pace than the others. Could be a faint flicker of TCA in this, maybe some sort of woody VA, but even if not, this is a little clunky relative to the beautiful expression of the ‘87 Landonne and Turque alongside. On the palate this fruit is more advanced than the other two, and suggests that this is either mildly damaged or perhaps just coming unglued, but this seems unlikely given the stellar performance of the Turque and Landonne. Getting a bunch of different reads off of this as it seems to change with the wind, good smoke and soil coming through now. I mentioned to the highly knowledgable sommelier for the event that this wine might be corked, and she agreed...
This nose is straddling the soulful and earthy and the modern with smoky meat and soil coming through detectably oaked blackberry and black current. On the palate the black and blue fruit is bold and youthful, but there is developed nuance and earthy texture. Not overly impressed with the '94s.
This nose has an explosive blueberry ripeness and syrupy extraction. Surprisingly more youthful and modern than the ‘94 Landonne in the next glass. Vanilla and spice in the blackberry fruit. On the palate this is still dark and intense and the oak has not integrated. This is too modern and I don’t like it.
The nose here is rustic, earthy, and smoky above developed red berry fruit. Highly expressive. On the palate this is surprisingly vibrant and has great red berry fruit, a black cherry core, and nicely developed sweetness.
Good nose that has bold black currant and blackberry fruit but wth all the tell tale Northern Rhône smoked meat and acrylic. A pretty floral sweetness, violets, emerges in the perfume as well. Awesome on the palate too, earth and smoke tones developing nicely, but the black fruit is still quite primary. Everyone at dinner is buying these as I type.
This nose is excellent as well, every bit as detailed and big as the ‘98 Mouline, but hitting higher levels of aromatic expression with smoky hay and soy in addition to the lush blackberry fruit. The palate on this is considerably sweeter and lighter than the Mouline however. Very impressed with the '98s too.
This nose is noticeably riper than that on the ‘98 and has more sweetness and extract than earthy influence. The palate on this is mostly primary and even strikes as a little hot.
This nose is more compatible to the ‘98 La Turque than the ‘97 Mouline is to the ‘98. Ripe red and black fruit and a pronounced sweetness. The fruit on the palate here is dark and mostly primary, even a little hot.
This nose is brooding and all but completely closed, offering glycerin, graphite, and underripe blackberry. This isn’t totally monolithic and there is nice detail and complexity lurking underneath, just intense and inky right now. Cracked black pepper. On the palate this is too dense and rich to handle right now.
Whereas the ‘05 in the next glass is completely shut down and intense ink on the nose, this actually has a fair bit of purple perfume coming off it. It is also hotter and strikes the nostrils in a less pleasant way.
This nose is terrific with impressively youthful black currant and blackberry, but with an elegant floral perfume. Immensely powerful but very fine and pure. Fresh flowers and damp gravelly minerals. Hugely expressive and profoundly beautiful.
This is a gorgeous nose as well and has more ripeness and aromatically expressive high / sweet notes, if missing the remaining power of the ‘91. Great acrylic / clay earth with subtle smoke.
Nose is great, totally comparable to the ‘90. Gamey meat, scorched earth, super fresh and youthful. Lush on the palate, youthful and fresh but with great earth influence throughout.
Huge and enticing bouquet, lush blackberry and black currant, cool bouldery minerality, mild smoked meat and scorched earth, and a highly elegant floral perfume above it all, violates. Highly expressive, complex, and detailed. Still seems youthful really... An amazing projection that you can smell like six inches out of the glass. There is so much power and complexity here, but delivered with such softness. Damp coffee grounds. Soft black cherry. As one connoisseur put it, this is a little like a nice landing of a 747...
Beautiful too, comparable to the ‘88 Turque, but a few gears behind in terms of aromatic expression. Dense earth-influenced palate. Last wine of the night and notes obviously falling apart.
