Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1988 Réserve de la Comtesse

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Just after opening there was not so much to discover. Medium bodied and fairly acidic. After some time the wine showed more of its complexity. I did not score the wine because I didn’t know what to think. Will it be better after more ageing, or will it die in the bottle?

  • 1996 Château Montviel 85 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Deep bouquet with new oak. Juicy and a lot of tannin. Not extremely full bodied. Cassis like you also find in Pauillac. Needs a few more years of bottle ageing.

  • 1995 Château Pedesclaux 86 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Rustic wine. Still young, little oak, very much cassis juice and a good amount of tannin. This wine needs at least 3 – 4 more years before it starts to open up.

  • 1989 Château La Commanderie Pomerol 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Developed bouquet with celery. This wine is at the end of its mature life, but still ok. Spicy, fairly full bodied, some creamy sweetness and some high acidity.

  • 1995 Château La Pointe 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This is a very nice wine right now already. Full and complex bouquet with some spices like thyme. Juicy, good amount of oak, acidity and good tannin. Little liquorice as well. Now already very appealing, but it will grow with some more ageing.

  • 1986 Château Lafite Rothschild 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark. Deep backward bouquet, ink. Enormously full bodied, loaded with cassis and ripe black cherries, which gives the wine just that little gentle sweetness. Amazingly complete wine. An aftertaste which lasts for minutes. Now at a perfect drinking moment, but the well hidden acidity holds a promise for the future. Great wine!

  • 1986 Château Le Gay Pomerol 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Deep dark ruby. Creamy and butter in the bouquet as well as the taste. Complex and elegant, but firm at the same time. Good amount of tannin to make it last for several years more.
