3 Day Wine Reviews that Rock!

Introduction

Some great wines I have consumed in early 2018 over 3 days. A few were too good to wait that long.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2013 Talley Vineyards Chardonnay Rincon Vineyard 93 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley

    (2/14/2018)

Day 1: Tart with oak, spices, nutmeg, lemon and pear. Not the most balanced effort and slightly oxidized. Drinkable but this day 1 impression is saying drink now. Will revisit on day 2. Score withheld.
Day 3: This wine has transformed and confirms that sampling well made wines over several days is rewarding. The oxidized impact is no longer present. Much more fruit with lemon, sour apple, pear and unripe peaches. Nice minerality in this wine and medium to long finish. While I would have been disappointed with the results of a day wine taste of this I am pleased with where this is at. Excellent value for what I paid for this. 93 plus.

  • 2009 Verget Chablis 1er Cru Grand Élevage 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    (2/16/2018)

My two local guys got this right and someone I don't know didn't. Shells, orange peel, lemon and saline. For a lower level Chablis this is an excellent value and one that is drinking at peak right now. Screw cap helps and should be all closers in Burgundy but that is my opinion. Solid 91 plus.
Day 2: Still drinking well but not as good as it lost some of its fruit profile. Picks up some mint on day 2 along with an interesting match stick quality. Not as good as day 1 so I would pop and pour and consume. Drink now!

  • 2012 J. Christopher Pinot Noir Lumière 92 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

    (2/16/2018)

Day 1: Drinking well out of the gate. Underbrush, raspberries, strawberries, floral and spice. Quite balanced and good acidity. Great food wine. This is singing now and we will see what it does over a few days. 92 points
Day 2: Not enjoying this as much on day 2. A lot of underbrush and the fruit is a bit mute. Recommend pop and pour and enjoy on day 1. Day 2 score would be around 87.
Day 3: Why you never give up on a wine. While not as intense this wine still features some really nice fruits and earth components. Finish is a little harsh but overall better than day 2 review. 90 points
Recommendation: Pop and pour and enjoy on day 1.

  • 2013 Bodega Norton Privada Mendoza 93 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

    (2/24/2018)

Day 1: One of the most under appreciated wines on Cellar Tracker. Don't assume South American wines can't deliver like Bordeaux. This one delivers in spades. On the pop and pour the funk is in the house. Good minerality along with plums, spices and tobacco. Very complex wine and medium to long finish. This is great right out of the gate. It will be hard to hold this one for 3 days. 92 plus.
Day 2: Still has that amazing funk on the nose/palate. I have only experienced that on a handful of South American wines. Funk, raspberries, minerality, plums and tobacco. Some nice fruits showing more promient on this wine. Really complex for a wine under $20. Finish is long. Will see day 3 and might have to go day 4 on this one. 92 plus.
Day 3: Still offers the Bordeaux like funk along with more defined fruits. Blueberries, dark cherries, spices and minerality. Such a delicious offering. Even better than day 2. Just finishing up on my new wine business and could not have picked a better under $20 to celebrate with. 93 points
Day 4: Not as good as day 3 but not surprised by that. Gets some Eucalyptus qualities that was not present prior. Still a 90 point wine on day 4.
Conclusion: If you want to drink this wine now decant for a good hour. If you plan on enjoying over the course of a few days than pop and pour and let sit in the glass. Amazing stuff!!!

  • 2010 Ardal Tradicion Ribera del Duero Reserva Selección Especial 93 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

    (3/9/2018)

Day 1: Wanted to experiment with a bottle that was shipped and how it would drink next day. Well yes wine can taste great right after being shipped. This has a wonderful nose of menthol, blueberries, spices, wood and dust. Palate is solid. Nice fruit and earth featuring blueberries, cherries, dust, wood and spices. Medium plus finish and concentrated. This wine should evolve over the next 15 years. Excellent value for only $22.99!!! Outstanding WTSO offering. 92 points
Day 2: Really in a dumb phase. The fruit elements are not as present as day 1 and certainly day 3 after the review. 88 points
Day 3: Really nice fruit emerging that was not as present on day one. Cherry, strawberries, floral and menthol. Much brighter wine and really is a Newer World offering from Ribera del Duero. I am wondering if since this wine was just shipped it needed some air to really open up. There will be a reward for 3 to 5 years of age or a day 3 hold. 93 +.

  • 2014 Château Mongravey 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    (3/12/2018)

Day 1: This is why I launched 3 Day Wine Review because this wine will improve over the course of 3 days. I sampled this wine at Surdyk's in the fall and it had been prep properly and was rocking. Currently chestnuts, gravel, spices, wood and cherry. Will revisit on day 2 and 3. Currently 91 points plus.
Day 2: Violets, gravel, earth, wood, cherry, plum and spices. Very multilayered wine that is opening up from day 1. Good acidity and medium plus finish. Not a powerhouse wine but elegant and classic Left Bank! Will revisit day 3. 92 points
Day 3: Similar on the nose but the palate has picked up significant weight. Very concentrated with dark fruits, wood, spice, chocolate and gravel elements. This is longer on the finish also. Really well made wine with aging potential. 92 plus
Recommendation: Hold this wine for 3 to 5 years for day 1 consumption. If not heavy decant for 3 to 5 hours.

  • 2012 Shirvington Shiraz 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

    (4/1/2018)

My second experiment with shipping wine and drinking a bottle on arrival. The first experiment proved no impact on the quality of the wine but this one has me thinking different. I have waited until day 3 to even start a note.
Day 3: Dark purple. Better on day 3 with dust, violets, Asian spices, dark fruits and crushed rock. This is way more integrated than day 1 and 2 and I would have not been able to give the wine a score. Not the Aussie fruit bomb experience here at all. The first few days had a lot of oak/vanilla. Seems to be mellowing out. I will hold this for day 4 and 5 and see where it is at. 90 points
Day 4: More balanced which indicates this needs some cellar time. Nice fruits featuring blueberries, boysenberries and blackberries. Palate is more balanced and almost elegant. Very smooth finish and decant acidity. This should prove to be an outstanding wine.
Recommendation: Hold for 3 years. Decant and enjoy. 92 plus

  • 2012 Kaesler Avignon 94 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    (4/6/2018)

Day 4 Review: Singing and even better than day 3. Garrique, spices, dust and red currants. The flavors on the finish are mesmerizing. This is without a doubt the best $14 wine I have ever purchased. This wine has a long life ahead and could be the best Grenache based wine I have tasted from Australia. Outstanding!

  • 2012 Witness Tree Vineyard Pinot Noir Vintage Select 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (4/14/2018)

Day 1: Absolutely brilliant! This wine is drinking so well I don't know that I will get 3 days out of it. A harmony of fruits and earth elements. Nose is aromatic with cranberries, strawberry, spices and rose petals. Palate is juicy fruit along with spices, floral and minerals. Finish is medium plus and acidity is laser sharp. At 14.2% alcohol you get no heat on this wine. This is probably the best day 1 tasting of a wine all year. Definitely a top 10 candidate for 2018. 93 points plus!
Day 2: Not as good but still solid. More earth elements than the great fruit from day 1.
Recommendatoin: Pop and pour and enjoy.

  • 2012 Thomas Fogarty Pinot Noir Rapley Trail Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (4/14/2018)

Day 1: Almost drank all of the 2012 Witness Tree Pinot on day 1 so decided to try something from Cali to compare. More Burgundian with earth, floral, stone and red currants on the nose. The palate is very pleasant with nice minerality, cranberries, spices and floral notes. Medium plus finish. Outstanding! 93 points
Day 2: This one will also not make it to day 3. Solid on day 2 but also has lost some of its fruit. Drink day 1.
Recommendation: Drink on day 1 on a pop and pour. This could age for 2 or 3 years but would not recommend beyond that.
