France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Served alongside the 1998 RP&F CC. Old gold, and with a richer nose of salted honeycomb and candied lemon. More obvious Grand Cru weight than the CC. After an hour, faint touch of hardness shows on the finish. Beautiful wine, to be enjoyed now, don't keep.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Served alongside the 1998 RP&F BBM. Light golden colour and classic RP&F CC nose of limes and sea shells. Lighter on its feet than the BBM. Fresher and with time in hand, but further complexity unlikely.
Served alongside the 1990, the 1996 BDX can be a little tough, but have great structure so I am a fan of the vintage. This was a youthful bottle with a classic nose of cedar, blackcurrants and cassis with an herbaceous overlay of capsicum. Nose enriches with air. Tannin and acid are still prominent on the palate but the ingredients are all there. Needs more time.
Served alongside the 1996. Classic, old school Cordier BDX, with a touch of farmyard on opening that gave way to glorious cedar, leather, tobacco and cassis. Palate is both complex and rich, with all of the above and pot pourri. Lovely mouthfeel, fully mature and with terrific length. Will keep, but see no reason not to enjoy now.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
This had been bottled less than a month and had just flown half way around the world, so not great preparation. The colour is luminous. Pomegranate, cherry, muted spice and cranberry jube fruits are overlain by new toasty cinnamon oak. Crisp, beautifully structured and with a zingy acidity, this should be very long lived.
Old gold. Nose of coconut and pineapple with a lick of lime brulee. Glorious palate with great balance, cut and acidity. No over the top richness here, just a beautiful and stylish Barsac. Aging potential indeterminate.
