Introduction

I pulled four wines out of the cellar to run by KC as potential supper matches and for her continuing education. We tried all of them against each course to see which worked best…The results are below

Flight 1 - Bracket one - first course (2 Notes)

Smoked beef rib - the St Joseph for the meat and the Cornas for the lovely charry bits on the outside!

Flight 2 - Bracket two - main course (1 Note)

Oxtail & Pork neck stew with Paris Mash

  • 2008 Patrick Clemencet Corton-Les Grandes Lolières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Earthy, leather, red fruits, touches of orange peel and cream . Quite forward on the nose with plentiful spice. Juicy, yes, also slightly oxidised, with sour fruits but this is big and bold for a Burgundy. Slightly gritty tannin though the sour fruit carries long. compelling.

Flight 3 - Bracket three - not placed (1 Note)

And this poor fellow didn't really match to any of the food…

  • 2005 Domaine Belle Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

blackberry, pretty berry notes, slight dish wash water, sweet liquorice with charred stalks and fresh pink peppercorns. Exceedingly juicy acidity, fresh ripe black fruits. Tannins are near fully resolved; just a little burring on the palate and the wine remains rich, though savoury. Nice

Closing

Lovely night! The smoked beef rib was courtesy of Vic's and the stew and mash from my own fair hand. The wines were all quite different but, fortunately, in reasonably nick - though I still feel the Clemencet was a bit forward.
