  • 1999 Château Palmer 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Blind tasting with Thomas Duroux at Chateau Palmer. Wouldn't you know it that this flight of three were all the same vintage out of different formats -- 1999. All three were gorgeous, dark, earthy, floral and rich with lifting acidity and great energy. However, what really surprised me was how I preferred the one from 375ml, to the 750ml, as the 375 showed a more open floral and spice character and the 750 seemed quite broad on the palate. However, it was the magnum that stole the show, with more power, tension and focused fruit. (93+ - 375ml, 91 - 750ml, 94 1.5L Mag)

The nose was dark, showing crushed stone, minerals, dark red berries, Indian spice, and savory herbs. On the palate, I found a soft expression, offset by tart red and blackberries, as tannin mounted contrasting inner florals and brisk acidity. It was long, structured and complex through the finish, with tart berry tones, and lingering herbal and spice notes.

  • 2017 Château Mouton Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The nose was zesty with dark red berry, currant, perfumed florals, and spice, in an almost savory expression. On the palate, I found silky, broad and pliant textures offset by a wash of vibrant dark red fruits, minerals and spice. The finish was long and structured with fine tannin coating the senses while dark red fruits fought to make themselves known.

  • 2005 Château d'Armailhac 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The nose was dark, and woodsy, with crushed red berry, currant, exotic spice, and dried floral tones. On the palate, I found silky textures, savory with excellent energy, as masses of dark red fruit wash across the senses leaving fine tannin in their wake. The finish was long, with staining red berry tones, florals and intense, still youthful tannin.

  • 2005 Château Mouton Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The nose was dark and penetrating, showing a sweet, spicy, gorgeous mix of red berries, currant, soaring floral tones, hints of licorice, earth and herbs. On the palate, it was silky, almost creamy, and weighty yet balanced with pure red and blackberry fruits, hints of spice and mounting tannin. The finish was long, long ,long... structured yet fresh and almost savory. This bottle didn’t have the tension that I found at a tasting in 2016, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

  • 1998 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

(Limited Notes and no official scores, as this was blind tasting with Jean Hubert Delon.) The '98 whet our appetites for what was to come, showing its class in spades. It's drinking beautifully already, yet still quite youthful for it's age. There's a richness here that coated the palate with chewy dark fruits, yet ended fresh and refined.

  • 1988 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

(Limited Notes and no official scores, as this was blind tasting with Jean Hubert Delon.) The '88 was gorgeous in it's maturity; earthy, meaty with depths to spare. There was a bit of rusticity here, which came across as quite pleasing.

  • 1986 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

(Limited Notes and no official scores, as this was blind tasting with Jean Hubert Delon.) Then the '86 hit the table and the room grew silent as the wine opened slowly in the glass, seeming to grow in depth and size yet completely balanced and pleasurable right now. There was a polished youthfulness to the fruit with a remaining crunch of residual tannin. It's drinking wonderfully, and easily falls into one of the top ten older Bordeaux drinking experiences of my life.

  • 1985 Château Léoville Las Cases

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

(Limited Notes and no official scores, as this was blind tasting with Jean Hubert Delon.) As for the '85, it was simply amazing; a wine that is still maturing and in excellent form; dark, earthy, floral, and herbaceous in all the best ways with vibrant fruit and enveloping textures--amazing. I hope to be able to taste this again one day, because I believe there is still more to come on the path of its maturity.
