Introduction

My favorites echoed the groups.

Wine of the Night - 2013 Concho y Toro Don Melchor
2nd - 2010 Familia Zuccardi Malbec Aluvional La Consulta
3rd - 2010 Two Hands Samantha's Garden shiraz

Flight 1 (14 Notes)

  • 2015 Quinta Essentia Chenin Blanc 88 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

I'm not sure what was up with this bottle. It seemed angular and harsh. There was no smooth unctuous golden fruit that I associate with Chenin.

  • 2013 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 93 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

A small pour to start a Southern Hempishere tasting. Full-bodied with ripe golden fruit. There is a touch of alcohol.

  • 2012 Akarua Pinot Noir Bannockburn 88 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn

This was not well received at a Southern Hemisphere tasting. The nose is that of a very cherry light pinot noir. The palate is incredibly thin.

  • 2011 Brennan Pinot Noir Gibbston Vineyard 90 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn

I brought this to a Southern Hemisphere tasting. The nose is cherries and a lot of complexity. The nose suggests this wine will be delightful. The palate becomes a bit astringent. I'm not sure if this wine is too old or too young. Maybe in a dumb phase? The next bottle will reveal more.

  • 2014 Spier Pinotage 21 Gables Private Collection 90 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch

I had given up on Pinotage, but this wine was enjoyable. It was very savory. Medium-bodied and fresh, with just a touch of the asphalt/rubber that often dominates Pinotage. This was a pleasant surprise for me.

  • 2012 Matias Riccitelli Malbec 88 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

The fruit is purple to black. There is a fair amount of anise, and it's a bit astringent. This wine is drinkable, but not a great representation of malbec.

  • 2010 Familia Zuccardi Malbec Aluvional La Consulta 92 Points

Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco, La Consulta

Slow o'd a couple hours. For malbec, this was enjoyable. It is mostly red fruit, but there are a lot of interesting fruit flavors present.

  • 2009 Pisano ArretXea Grand Reserve 89 Points

    Uruguay, Progreso

We didn't know what to make of this wine. It seems to be a rich and somewhat vegetal cabernet, with anise and underbrush. This wine would do well with a steak.

  • 2013 Mascota Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Big Bat 89 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza

Oaky and rich. This wine is quite modern, seems heavily oaked, and has a lot of fruit. I'm sure that many people will enjoy it for those qualities. I find it nondescript.

  • 2013 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor 93 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

Decanted about 4 hours. This wine still drank young, but there is a lot there to enjoy. The wine is loaded with complex flavors. The nose is slightly dominated by green bell pepper. This was the wine of the night at a Southern Hemisphere tasting, and I agree. Also, infanticide.

  • 2010 Two Hands Shiraz Samantha's Garden 92 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Slow o'd for 3 hours. This wine was the favorite shiraz at a Southern Hemisphere tasting. The wine is definitely Aussie shiraz, is lush, big and rich. There is tobacco and earth. As others have noted, it is on the verge of being flabby, but manages to hold it together.

  • 2011 Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden 89 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Served right after the 2010 Samantha's garden, this was clearly the lesser wine, and attributed to vintage difference. This wine was less interesting and seemed leaner the 2010.

  • 2012 Torbreck The Factor 91 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

This wine was not as popular as I thought it would be at a Southern Hemisphere tasting. It is definitely rich, downright unctuous, but was considered over the top by several people, including me. There is a lot here, and it may be more balanced down the road.

  • 2012 Shingleback Shiraz D Block Reserve 89 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Slow o'd a couple hours. The nose is fairly rich Aussie shiraz. The palate is austere and thin. I am left thinking that this wine is either in a dumb phase right now or this wine is a lean representation of shiraz.
