Introduction

Another wonderful dinner @ Alo which continues to be my favorite restaurant in Toronto. Everything was creative and enjoyable.

Flight 1 - Pre-dinner drink (1 Note)

  • 2016 Domaine des Aubuisières Vouvray Sec Le Petit Clos

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

Again off the by the glass list at Alo. It's interesting this is described as a 'Sec'. It was actually only very lightly sweet. More floral in nature. Very clean in nature. Love Chenin and how nicely the grape can balance between having real body and having a nice acidity that balances.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

Japanese Fluke, Green Apricot, Red Plum, Yuzu

  • 2017 Quinta dos Termos Beira Interior Fonte Cal Reserva

    Portugal, Beiras, Beira Interior

This was the lead wine this time which I think made it stand out a bit more. Paired with a fluke and that worked just very well. The sour in some of the plum really brought out more of a fruit note here. The wine by itself is light and easy, but with the food went to a different level.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

Kanpachi, Summer Squash, Finger Lime, Furikake

Flight 4 (1 Note)

B.C. Salt Spring Mussels, Mint, Yukon Gold Potatoes, Smoked Butter

  • 2016 Acústic Celler Priorat +ritme blanc

    Spain, Catalunya, Priorat

First time with a blanc from this region. I didn't realize they made white wines, but this was really nice. Grenache blanc is a favorite of mine and I like what they did here. It's a fuller bodied version that can stand up to a heavier food pairing (mussels), but also helps almost cut the heaviness of the food with the acidity in the wine. There is a lightly floral and almost a touch of a sweet white fruit. Good.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

Sea Scallops, Shishito Pepper, Lomo Iberico, Sauce Choron

Flight 6 (1 Note)

Muscovy Duck, Tokyo Turnip, Tamarind, Peanuts

  • 2015 Foradori Granato

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Not quite as compelling the Mt Etna we had right after, this was still a clearly well done wine. A bit more fruit in this one. Very approachable this young. Touch of a tang which was maybe a hint of the unripe, but I liked that.

Flight 7 (1 Note)

Snake River Farms Wagyu Ribcap, Eggplant, Black Seasame, Dashi
Bread & Butter

  • 2015 Masseria Setteporte Etna Rosso

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

Really liked this one. It's almost like you can taste the volcanic soil in the wine. Not that it's gritty, but maybe a smokiness to it? Very dry. The waygyu it was paired with was just killer too and this wine did a good job playing the supporting role.

Flight 8

Pineapple, Armagnac, Earl Grey

Flight 9 (1 Note)

Milk Chocolate, Buckwheat, Raisin

  • 2017 Braida (Giacomo Bologna) Brachetto d'Acqui

    Italy, Piedmont, Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG

This isn't the most interesting of dessert wines, but it does fit the bill of light and sweet and not overdone. I see where the pairing was going, but something didn't quite fit for me. Perhaps it was that you could really feel the sugar here and it was more like straight sugar? The dish itself was less sweet and with the wine came across as almost a touch bitter.

Flight 10 (1 Note)

Strawberry, Kalamansi Lime, Vanilla

  • 2017 Vittorio E. Figli Bera Moscato d'Asti

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti

This is the kindof wine that make you change your mind about a style. It's Moscato, but in a wine drinker's style. Light and just hints of sweet and really the opposite of cloying. The sweet is just the right level for the strawberries and really compliments the dessert well. It's overall very enjoyable.
