Singapore

During the Matter of Taste event in Singapore, Eron Brooks, the new reviewer of Oregon, introduced the wines of Oregon during two Master Classes. One focused on the Willamette Valley, the other one mixed Oregon wines with Burgundies to compare them side by side.
I found the Oregon Pinots very well balanced, structurally more like Nuits St.Georges wines than California Pinot. Aromatically I did not see much excitement or even greatness. May be because they were too young, or closed, who knows. Overall I found the Chardonnays more interesting than the Pinots.
2015 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Durant Vineyard 92 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Nose of lemon, barley, fresh classic. Good for sure, but not great.

2011 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Distinctively fresh, mineralic, lime and wet stones. Needs time but will add a point or two once mature.

2015 Bethel Heights Chardonnay THE HIGH WIRE 95 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
This Chard was a winner. Very crisp, mineralic. Lemon but also very floral with camomile, bergamot. Good complexity.

2015 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Richard's Cuvee Whistling Ridge Vineyard 92 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Also here a classic, almost Chablis experience, mineralic, lime. Good, but not as complex as the Bethel Heights and Walter Scott next to it.

I really liked this Chard. Racy acidity, mineralic, earl gray tea, flowers. Very nice complexity here

2015 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir Goodrich Vineyard 88 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
Found this nose too fruity, almost Beaujolais style. Lots of cherry, some licorice. Did not find much depth. Freshness was good though.

2015 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Light ruby (pretty much all Oregon Pinots has this color). Muted nose, not much aroma, Burgundian palate, elegant texture, good palate but little aroma.

2014 Boedecker Cellars Pinot Noir Roshini Vineyard 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, McMinnville
Fruity and ripe, still freshness ok, lots of blue fruit and plum. Good but also a bit uneventful.

2013 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir South Block 93 Points

Lovely nose here, spices, red fruit, black fruit, cola. One of the better and more aromatic wines of this tasting.

2014 Domaine Nicolas-Jay Pinot Noir Bishop Creek 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
A bit green and grassy, on the lean side but not rough. Will the greenness disappear with a bit more bottle age?

2011 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Just like the Jay next to it, this is also very lean (as so often with Meo). Meager palate, I can see that the aromas a good here but they should have worked on the ripeness and fruit a bit more here.

2014 Bergström Pinot Noir Winery Block 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Chehalem Mountains
Another strict and lean wine here. These Willamette wines all strike me as wines of classic palates which is good but they lack fruit and aroma. Like a NSG 1er Cru from a 2011 vintage. Nothing to write home about.

2014 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard 93 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
OK, first wine I liked in this series. Good volume and texture here, aromatically a bit closed but potential visible.

2008 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
I liked the aromas here, some game, sandal wood, musk, red fruit. Very light for a Grand Cru and definitely to lean for a good Clos de Vougeot.

2012 Trisaetum Pinot Noir Family Reserve 94 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
This was my favorite Oregon Pinot. Lovely savory aromas, Gevrey style, earth, red and dark fruit. Mineralic and fresh palate

2015 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Louise 88 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
Hmm, I found this to be very jammy, lots of fruit and not enough structure and freshness. 14% Alc says it all... Me no like!

2012 Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
The nose was very shy here as well. Muted. On the palate the wine was also much leaner than I wished. Petit Monts is a great VSR vineyard and 2012 a very decent vintage. I hope for all people who bought this wine that it will come out of its shell because it is not cheap. 90+?
