Introduction

Hosted by Arvi in its new Zurich wine shop, called Arvino. Lots of experienced tasters were there which made it interesting to compare notes. Matthieu Perrin from the estate was present and led through the evening. With its high Mourvèdre share (>60%) in its blend, the Hommage is a very interesting wine, as there are few Mourvedre dominated super-premium wines.
The style of the wine became clear during the evening. The wine is dense, structured with lots of blue fruit when young and then develops strong farmyard, game, leather aromas with age. I liked the wine a lot, it has to be said though that there are wines of similar quality in CdP at lower price points.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2015 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A clear winner, together with the 2009. Very young and primary aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice, dark fruit and some leather. The structure is massive but the tannins are ripe and the acidity there to support it. Does not feel heavy since Alc. is 14.5%, on the low side for this Cru. Easy to see that this will be one of the great Hommages. 97-98

  • 2014 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very young and much lighter than the 2015 next to it. Also with some red fruit intermixed with blue fruit. Elegant and less tannic but somehow a bit thin almost for a top Southern Rhone wine. May be I am underestimating this vintage but I felt it to be a bit too easy raspberry/Haribo Cote du Rhone AOC in style compare to the towering 2015. 92-94

  • 2013 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

I really liked this wine. A mini version of the 2009. Has both ripenes and structure going for it albeit at a lower level. Aromas are still dominated by dark fruit with barnyard notes taking a back seat. Excellent balance. Give it 2-3 more years for tannins to soften before start drinking it.

  • 2011 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This started off very strong. It was the first of the vintages with tertiary notes (barnyard, meat, leather, truffles) and softened tannins by maturity. After a while in the glass it lost a bit of tention as the other vintages gained momentum with air. I think this is a good but not great Hommage, one that will deliver drinking pleasure young while you are waiting for the 2010 and 2012 to come around.

  • 2009 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Together with the 2015 the WOTN for me. Excellent structure and aromas. Already some complex tertiary notes with dark fruit, barnyard, leather, meat and forest floor. Alc. is also in check here with 14.5%. Glad to see my previous high note confirmed. Makes me wonder how good the 2010 is.

  • 2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This vintage was very sweet and ripe but not overripe to be fair. Still I found it to be too soft, not enough structure to be among the greats. The aromas were complex, with cooked fruit, game, meat, leather. This one also had 15.5% Alc., among the highest. Some could handle that, others not. Aromas 96, palate 93 was my final take.

  • 2004 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This wine puzzled. Some liked it but many, including me, found it too ripe and oxidative. Lots of luvage and cooked fruit. Also heavy on the palate, with alcoholic heat on the finish. I wonder whether this was a representative bottle. This also had 15.5% Alc, among the highest. 88-92, depending on how much you subscribe this (over)ripe, borderline oxyidative/Rioja style.

  • 1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Distinctively tertiary nose with leather, tobacco, sous-bois, farmyard. The tannin are mature and soft on the palate. Long finish.

  • 2016 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Not a fan of Rhone whites but this was undeniably nice. The nose is fantastic with lots of white flowers, iodine, saline, fennel notes. The palate is full bodied with lots of glycerol but not flabby. The salinity makes it fresh, even thought the acidity is only at medium level. A great way to finish the evening. Nose 96, palate 94.
