Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2016 Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay 93 Points

    Australia, Tasmania, Coal River

Fairly deep gold with a slight greenish tinge. A pure bouquet of lemon, pear, wet river boulder, nectarine and cinnamon. The last element reflects a little spicy, toasty note that is barrel, not fruit, derived. Reduction and oak are present on bouquet but in good proportion, particularly for such a young wine, adding some complexity and interest. On palate, quite Burgundian. Ripe, rich fruit balanced by piercing, racy acidity. Sufficiently dry. Lemon and lime citrus, a touch of greengage, poached pears, a little rock melon and flinty minerality. There is some vanillin oak that is yet to integrate. Good detail and serious weight and length. Hold for 2-3 more years. Impressive.

  • 2011 Rockford Shiraz Basket Press 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Deep, primary garnet. Some vanillin and milk chocolate oak notes leading to blackcurrants and other dark fruit, mochaccino, smokey, barbequed game meat, black tea and Asian five spice aromas, with a dash of black pepper. More Northern Rhone syrah than classic Barossa Valley. That impression continues on palate. Lean, spare and bone dry. Excellent definition and precision. A little below mid weight. Blackcurrants, dartk cherries, graphite, espresso, cooked meat juices, garrigue and a touch of black pepper. The oak more integrated on palate. Fine grained tannins. Finishes quite long, mineral and dry. I really like this Basket Press, the product of a difficult vintage I understand. Now open for business, but, with this structure, I can also see it being a long term cellar wine.
