Introduction

Our tasting here was hosted by Sylvie Boxler, who was very friendly and knowledgeable.

For Sommerberg Riesling we were given the secret decoder ring for the lot numbers.

L31JV is from the young vines
L31E is from the Eichberg plot
L31D is from the old vines plot where the vines are 60 years old

In some vintages like 2002 there are 2 different “D” cuvees, DI and DII. The '02 DII was not available to taste and was sold out but Sylvie said it is a very special and limited wine. After our discussion and tasting Sylvie was kind enough to sell us some of this wine from their private/held stock. Merci Beaucoup Sylvie!

As with most vintners they are not quite sure what to make of '03 and definitely feel it is a vintage to drink early. The Sommerberg Rieslings seemed to do quite well in the vintage given our tasting.

  • 2003 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg JV

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    Light yellow in color, this wine is open for business now. Apples, peaches and minerals are all there in this medium bodied wine. Not one for long aging but should drink really well over the next several years.

  • 2003 Albert Boxler Riesling Brand

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    There is only one cuvee ( L32 ) of this wine made each vintage. Light yellow in color with a slightly green tint to it, this wine was all about minerals and stones and tasted very young. Lemons make an appearance on the acidic finish. Not as good as the '03 ZH Brand Riesling tasted yesterday.

  • 2003 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg L31E

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    Medium yellow in color with a hint of green. Less open than the JV bottling, this medium to full bodied wine showed good structure. Could be very good with 2-3 years in the cellar.

  • 2003 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg L31D

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    Light yellow in color. This is the old vines cuvee and this showed in the classiness of this wine. Light to medium bodied with explosive minerality on the palate and a long lemony finish. Sylvie feels this will be the longest ager by far of the '03 wines.

  • 2002 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Brand

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    Lot L525. Light to medium yellow in the glass with smoke and yellow fruits on the nose. Some sweetness on the palate but good acidity to match. Less depth than the
    Rieslings. This bottle had been open 5 days when we tried it.

  • 2000 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Brand

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    L52. Medium gold in color. Sweeter than the '02 but also better depth and balance. Really opens up on the long finish loaded with yellow fruits.

  • 2000 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Vendange Tardive

    LVT00. Medium gold in color this wine was made from non Grand Cru vines located below Brand. The sweetness was very similar to the '00 Brand Pinot Gris but the
    balance and depth are not there in this wine.

  • 1999 Albert Boxler Pinot Gris Brand Vendange Tardive

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    LVTB99I. Light to medium yellow in color. Nice balance but not as deep as the '00 Brand Pinot Gris. Will not age as long.
