Introduction

An ongoing exploration of the latest (and last for this year) auction selection

Flight 1 - Bracket one - 1995 Margaux (2 Notes)

Blast, first corked Bordeaux in what feels like ages

  • 1995 Château Prieuré-Lichine Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of plums, cedar and slight cork taint. That taint is more evident on the palate. Though I hate to say it…FLAW

  • 1995 Château d'Angludet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

From Coravin. Plums, dusty spice, biscuit, leather, cream, a little cherry and sweet oak. The palate is a reflection of the nose, slightly sour acidity and firm but integrated tannins. Okay.

Flight 2 - Bracket two - 1996 Bordeaux (3 Notes)

What a very pleasant experience this bracket was

  • 1996 Château Beaumont

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

From Coravin. Slightly burnt toast over muted blackcurrant, a little leather, sweet spice. In the mouth it's freshly juicy, black hued fruits, tannins are stilly quite dry and grippy. It's quite simple but rather lovely.

  • 1996 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru)

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

From Coravin. Smells dense with dark, brooding fruit, sweet spice, leather, cigar box, polished oak, a little cream and caramel. Juicy, fleshy but still quite dense dark fruit, the tannins are silky but drying, fruit caries and becomes more leathery, woody and dried out on the finish. With time a fair amount of farmyard on the nose as well.

  • 1996 Château Doisy-Daëne

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

From Coravin. Cream, apricot, sweet spice, vanilla, toast, honey, slight orange. Lusciously sweet but not at all cloying. Tends to more orange and orange peel backed by apricot, warm spice and a touch of tannic grip on the mid palate. Glorious.

Closing

And that was all she wrote. Pity about the Prieure Lichine…and shame on me for not remembering how good aged Sauterne/Barsac is…
