Introduction

This was Kevin's mostly semi-annual tasting where we get a chance to drink some Big Bordeaux's that would otherwise be too expensive to drink. Wine of the night was the 1986 Chateau Margaux which was stunning. The 1989 Chateau Palmer was also great.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

Flight 2 (7 Notes)

  • 1994 Château Mouton Rothschild 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

2 hour decant. This is smoky and there is substantial tar. Slight funk, mostly there is a sense of decaying cedar. Overall this just hit 90 for me.

  • 1994 Château Haut-Brion 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

20 minute decant. Funk and red fruit that is slightly flashy. There is a lot of earth, some anise and significant complexity. The nose is a 95, palate is 94.

  • 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

4 hour decant. This wine had drying tannins and seemed to be brooding. There are components to suggest that it may be a great wine someday, but the components do not add up to a great experience.

  • 1986 Château Margaux 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Decanted 3.5 hours. This was elegant, refined and lovely. There is a heavenly perfume of red and blue fruit. Graphite, funk and silky tannins.

  • 1989 Château Palmer 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Decanted 90 minutes. There is slight menthol. On the 1st taste, I would have guessed cool climate syrah due to the meat, smoke and earth present. However, it relaxed into a clear Bordeaux with a lot of graphite and earth. The mouthfeel is exquisite with texture.

  • 1986 Château Lascombes Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

This wine was maderized, but it still was enjoyable to drink. Every once in a while, there is a whiff of complexity, but it is lurking and very much in the background. Even in its current state, I would give it an 88. Please cellar your wines correctly!

  • 1979 Château Palmer Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Supposedly the best of 3 bottles that were poorly stored. This was quite maderized and everyone dumped it.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1988 Château Climens 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Burnt orange, orange creamsickle ample acid, well-proportioned botyrtis. This was well-balanced and an elegant old Sauternes that is drinking wonderfully right now from a 750.
