Introduction

A close friend and I are both 1967 babies so we decided to throw a joint shindig at my house roughly in between our respective birthdays. I’m already 40 and he’s got about a month to go. The wines were all from my cellar and have been appropriately stored since I came into possession of them. I apologize for the brief and erratic notes, but it was much more of a party than a tasting so I didn’t have the time to really focus on all of the wines. What “notes” I did take were more scattered impressions dictated into my digital recorder which I had a devil of a time extricating from a variety of other crap that got recorded as the night wore on. I’ve taken the liberty of forming complete sentences from the recording. While I do regret not having more time to linger over all of the bottles, I also rarely have an excuse to open wines like these and this occasion was a good one. It was a blast to hang out and drink some stellar juice with my most intimate friends and family. After a few mags of Nicholas Feuillatte NV Brut bubbly (a perfectly serviceable party quaffer), the reds came out.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1996 Château Léoville Poyferré 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very youthful and primary – even more so than the Ducru. Plenty of sweet black fruit, grip, and definition. Stands toe to toe with the Ducru except at the finish. I’ll leave this alone for quite awhile.
