  • 2000 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 98 Points

    France, Champagne

from a magnum. this was the wine of the night. i went into this wine expecting it to be overpriced and overrated. i thought it was a trendy wine that wouldn't deliver. i was floored. this wine completely stopped me in mid-sentence. burnt yellow color. the nose was so sexy. flowers, strawberries, hazelnuts and fresh spring air on the nose, as well as all kinds of fruit blossoms. the depth of the nose was unbelievable. i could smell this wine forever. on the palate, this was remarkably elegant and silky, yet very powerful and full-bodied with flavors of crisp apple, fresh peaches, toast, flowers and hazelnut brittle. perfectly balanced and the finish is seemingly endless. this wine lives up to its reputation. i have been converted. 55% pinot noir, 45% chardonnay, grand cru vineyards only, aged five years on the lees.

  • 2000 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé 96 Points

    France, Champagne

golden color with fine bubbles. flowers, dried rose petals, apricots and figs on the nose. whoa, this nose is great. this is very full and rich on the palate, yet wonderfully balanced. flavors of almonds, marzipan, caramel, fig, apple, toast, the inside of an oak barrel, and forest fill the palate and just keep going. a sublime finish with a toasted almond character. this wine completely seduced me. from the nose, to the attack, the palate and the finish, this wine comes full circle and leaves you in awe. this will be good for years and years to come. truly spectacular.

bright yellow color, with an immense nose of pear extract and white flowers. pure, vibrant, refined and gorgeous. the acidity is just marvelously sharp. there are white peach, grapefruit, lemon, toast and silk notes on this champagne, and a finish that just goes on and on. had on it's own and then with scallops in a cream and mushroom sauce. just a tremendous champagne that could last forever. 40% from grand cru mesnil sur oger, 15% from grand cru avize, 10% from primier cru villers marmery, 100% maloactic and aged four years on the lees.

  • 1997 Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut Cuvée Palmes d'Or 93 Points

    France, Champagne

on the nose, this champagne reminds me of figs, nuts and a bit of molasses. it may sound ridiculous, but almost like there's a hint of tawny port in there, which is very intriguing. also some flowers mixed in. on the palate, this is silky and refined, yet very explosive. there are lots of almond, toast and fig notes, but then it transitions to a granny smith apple peel finish, which is elegant and long. very, very nice. 40% chardonnay from montgueux, chouilly, cramant and mensil and 60% pinot noir from bouzy, verzy, verzenay, ambonnay and ay.

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

the nose on this reminded me of mustard seeds, flowers and a hint of a sea aspect, like a faint smell of the seashells. very unique, but very interesting. rich, yet high acidity, and flavors of pear, orange, freshly buttered toast. a silky finish. very impressive.

for a regular brut, non-vintage, this was very impressive. this is a bigger, toastier style. full with lots of fig, apple, peach, toast and fresh crossaint. a very nice non-vintage that i will be sure to pick up and have around.

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé Sauvage 89 Points

    France, Champagne

a lot of people were bashing this. yes, it's very different, and didn't really strike me as champagne, but i really enjoyed this wine. kool-aid colored witha nose of lots of overripe strawberries that have ben sitting out for a while. dead on, that's what it smells like. this is big and reminiscent of california pinot noir, with cherries, cranberries and a bit of earth. this is a fruity, pinot-drinker's champagne. very unique. worth trying for sure.

  • 2000 de Venoge Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 87 Points

    France, Champagne

this was served a bit too warm, i suspect, so my notes may be a bit off. there was a bit of mustard and pear on the nose. on the palate, this had a lot of butter and toast. it seriously tasted like california chardonnay with a bit of bubbles thrown in. even a bit flabby. i was let down by this, but maybe it was off.

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Sublime Demi-Sec 80 Points

    France, Champagne

light brown color. it smells and tastes like fig syrup, quite fake tasting actually. and on the finish there is flavor that reminds me of celery stalks with a bit of molasses on it. that's the only way i know how to describe it. and it's not just because i prefer dry champagnes. this was just unbalanced.
