Introduction

Michael kindly hosted at his place. Rae made a pretty phenomenal accompaniment of salad and pasta with lamb ragu. Michael, Rae, Eric, Brandon, Clare and myself were in attendance.

Flight 1 - Whites (3 Notes)

  • 2015 Cantina del Signore Erbaluce di Caluso Riflessi 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Erbaluce di Caluso

    Aromas of ripe apples, meyer lemon and a bit of honeysuckle. Palate is similar to aromas with added flowers and nice pink grapefruit on the finish. Medium bodied with nice acids.

  • 2017 Malvira' Roero Arneis 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Roero

    Stony mineral aromas with tart apples, flower, and a bit of honeysuckle. Palate has tart apples, grapefruit pith, and flowers. Medium bodied, linear, with good minerals. Lacked some depth though.

  • 2011 Andrea TIrelli Colli Tortonesi Munta 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

    Hand carried by Michael from Italy. Skin contact Cortese. Tons of flowers on the nose with minerals, and mild nuts. Palate is medium bodied with herbs, flowers, cider and a hint of nuts. Detectable tannins on the midpalate. Some definite heat on the finish, which mars this a bit for me. Definitely the most unique and interesting wine of the night.

Flight 2 - Reds (7 Notes)

  • 2017 Cantine dei Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta Grignolino d'Asti 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Grignolino d'Asti

    Floral nose with minerals, herbs, mildly candied cherries, and raspberries. Palate reverses the order with ripe cherries and raspberries, herbs, flowers and earth. Light bodied. Not profound but is delicious with just enough complexity to hold one's interest. Nice QPR.

  • 2016 Castello di Verduno Verduno Pelaverga Basadone 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Verduno Pelaverga

    Herbal nose that I can only describe as Eastern herbal medicine, black pepper, and cherries. Palate had more red cherries being prominent with herbs, flowers, bark, and mild tannins. Elegant with a nice lingering finish.

  • 1983 Tenuta Monolo Bramaterra Riserva Flawed

    Corked unfortunately. Very mild when first opened but after 5 h slow ox and 1 hr in decanter, clearly corked. Too bad as there was some really nice cherry fruit, minerals, and earth underneath.

    Bright cherry and grapey aromas accompanied by flowers. Almost spritzy in the mouth with bright cherries, earth and bark. Fun and juicy wine.

  • 2007 Cantine del Castello di Conti Boca Il Rosso delle Donne 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Boca

    70% Nebbiolo, 25% Vespolina, 5% Uva Rara. Beautiful, elegant aromas of cherries, herbs, flowers, and earth. Palate is equally beautiful and elegant with cherries, earth, flowers and mint. Moderate tannins come up on the midpalate. Really liked this.

  • 1996 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Stood up for 3 weeks then decanted for 5h prior to back in bottle to bring to tasting. Beautiful seamless aromas of just ripe red cherries, green leaves, damp earth, and bark. Palate mirrored the just ripe cherries with accents of lime zest, earth, bark nad herbs. Prominent tannins on the midpalate with excellent acids giving this lift. Elegant and yet with power from the tannins. WOTN for me. Still has a lot of life left and if I had another bottle, would love to taste this on its 20th birthday.

  • 2017 Paolo Scavino Vino Rosso 83 Points

    Blend of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, and Barbera. Definitely modern with prominent oak both on the nose and palate. Prominent candied cherries and vanilla oak with a very polished, smooth mouthfeel. Lacks character and soul to me. Definitely not my style.

Flight 3 - After Dinner (1 Note)

  • NV Sibona Grappa Riserva - Aged in Madeira casks 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Piemonte DOC

    Grappa made from moscato and other grapes. Aged in madeira barrels. Rich grapey aromas with medicinal herbs and flowers. Palate had more orange marmalade balanced by savory medicinal herbs and nice acids. Smooth, beautiful finish. No harshness that one stereotypically thinks about grappa. Nice way to end the tasting.
