Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2013 Cappellano Barolo Piè Rupestris Otin Fiorin (Gabutti) 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Beautiful!
Pale ruby with a garnet rim. Automatically intense and superbly integrated. Dried and wet leaves. Bright red and black cherry. White cherry / peach / rose petal florals. Slight savory development - moist forest floor after rain.
Feels around 14.5% and classically medium minus body. High acid, high minus tannins (polished and rounded). Long floral and leafy finish.

Man, I really like young Nebbiolo when it’s firing.

  • 1975 Cappellano Barolo 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark medium minus garnet to an orange rim. Nose is slightly burnt toast-y - almost reductive like the 72 Musar!

Intense almost oily weight to this. Perfumed. A pronounced apple-soy-leather-leaves note - tertiary development. Crystalline and lustrous aroma! Slight meatiness. Prosciutto. Beautiful ghost of cherry. Long and evolving finish.

Medium plus polished and melted tannins. High acid but super well integrated. Feels 14%.

  • 2010 Bartlett Blueberry Winemaker's Reserve 92 Points

    USA, Maine

    Medium plus ruby color.
Intensely fruited - blueberries, mint, brambly dried scrubs. Subdued earthy / tertiary notes (oxidation, Brett, tamari age).

Medium plus body, feels 13.5% alcohol, good acid - medium plus, medium tannins - silky and fine-grained!

This is beautiful and persistent! Needs a bit of time to gain complexity on the palate, but a singular wine with promise.

  • 2011 Maculan Acininobili 90 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Breganze

    placeholder

Slight vanillin, strong fresh lychee, roasted peach, hunt of sweet corn (charred), and nectarine. Light botrytis - saffron.
Sweet. Feels 130-150g/L. Acid is medium plus. Not high. 13.5% (bottle says 13%).

The fruit forwardness of the nose reminds me of an eiswein, but with lower acid.

Ashish observed that while it’s intense, it’s not super long. I agree.
