2009 Blind Tasting

Introduction

The wines were known, but they were poured blind so none of us knew which was which. I thought that the Domaine de Chevalier, de Tertre, Pichon Baron, and Leoville were very obvious - and so they were! I confused the Paloumey and Ormes de Pez, which were the weakest wines by a mile (and not wines I really drink).

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine de Chevalier 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Sweet and soft, blueberry, oak, cherry compote, slightly smoky and bricky, faintly floral. Suave, silky palate with excellent depth, focus and length boding well for the future? Domaine de Chevalier? Correct.

  • 2009 Château Paloumey 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Dense, black fruited, serious - but simple. Heavy fruit on the palate, lots of tanning, good acidity, medium length. Ormes de Pez? No, Paloumey.

  • 2009 Château du Tertre 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Quite elegant, fine-boned without being exactly light. Effusive, floral, raspberry, strawberry, mineral nose. Cedary, blood palate. Good finish. Obviously the Margaux. Correct.

  • 2009 Château Léoville Poyferré 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Plush, inky, cedar, currant, chocolaty, and very deep. Very supple on the palate, balanced and very, very long on the cedary finish which bodes well. A very good wine from the Cuveliers. Leoville Poyferre? Correct.

  • 2009 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Showing a more cohesive whole than the last time I had this. Deep, serious, blackberry and pencil. Big, rich, robust, tannic but balanced palate. Beautiful presence on the palate. Surely the Pichon Baron? Correct.

  • 2009 Château Ormes de Pez

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Lightish, resinous, raspberry and strawberry. Light-ish palate, less substantial than the rest, weak finish. Paloumey? No, Ormes de Pez.

Closing

Very good 2009s, true to their terroir and giving already. Some have a long life ahead, most notably the Pichon Baron and Leoville Poyferre.
