Introduction

We had dinner at home with myself, Suzi, Mom, Bob and Justin since his family was out of town.

  • The meal started with apples & honey to celebrate a sweet New Year and then some chopped liver which I had made earlier in the day (onions sauteed brown in chicken fat, hard-boiled eggs, and salted & broiled chicken livers, all ground together into a creamy pate consistency with ample salt and cracked black pepper). To cut the fat in the liver I reached for a clean, cutting Sauvignon Blanc.
  • The main meal started with sweet, boiled Gefilte fish and then moved on to braised brisket, steamed and sauteed brussel sprouts and oven roasted potatoes with a hint of rosemary and garlic. With the braise I reached for a powerful and delicious Kosher red wine from Spain which matched beautifuly.
  • We finished up with Suzi's apple cake.
All in all, this was homey Jewish comfort food!

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2002 La Poussie Sancerre 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Another exceptionally nice bottle, very quenching with ample slate and grapefruit. The palate is dry and cutting with gorgeous minerality and tart, slightly smoky notes of citrus fruit. This is a terrific $20 bottle of wine.

  • 2000 Celler de Capçanes Montsant Peraj Ha'abib Flor de Primavera Kosher 90 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant

This is kosher? A delicious blend of Grenache, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose doesn't quite know what it wants to be with initially sappy aromas showing the grenache, then some pine needle, moving to notes of cassis and olive and finally showing a more bright nose of violet and raspberry. Wow, this is a chameleon! On the palate this is powerful and slightly ungainly, like a big puppy. The structure is clearly present with powerful, brooding mouthfeel, fairly tart fruit, very intense and tightly knit for now. The finish is gorgeous, with long, silky tannins, yet it is not too drying or acidic. This needs a year to two to integrate, but with some time it easily seems to have the stuffing to come together and earn another couple of points.
