Introduction

Suffer my teaching, but enjoy the food and wine! MS3 and lovely wife over for "grilling"!

Flight 1 - Opener (1 Note)

Served with minted goat cheese rolled into smoked salmon

Flight 2 - Dinner is served! (2 Notes)

"Double Hockey Puck" prime filet mignon!

  • 2008 Château Montrose 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

2 hour decant, moderate sediment (beware!). A bit austere to score higher, but I love the density, dark fruit, cigar box, stone, and spice notes. Tannins were winning a little more overnight. Next one in a year or two. This is one to track and not wait blindly for 10 more years (like the '05's!).

  • 2008 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga

2 hour decant and I like this more than 5 years ago! I did not realize until posting, that the last one I opened was also with a med student (7/14!). Tasting this with the '08 Montrose was a real nice demo of the differFRANCEs between Napa and Bordeaux. Nice mix of red and black fruit with mint, oak and earth notes. Great structure. MAYBE better on day 2! Drink 2020-2030!

Flight 3 - Dessert (2 Notes)

Chocolate pudding cake and some Oregon Creamery Caveman Blue!

  • 2014 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Late Bottled Vintage 91 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

This is a nice sturdy example of LBV and makes you want some Oregon Creamery Blue or a dense chocolate pudding cake...ok, got those! Black fruit, spice and earth/ stone. Decent acidity and moderate tannins all in good balance. Drink now to keep your hands off the good stuff.

  • NV Warre Porto Otima 10 Year Old Tawny 92 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

If you're reading this, you know how good it is for the price! Classic nutty, caramel, date/fig, spice and dried orange rind notes. Then the hedonistic sweetness kicks in with some decent acid on the finish. Drink et al.
