Capital Grille

A pleasant and complex wine, and yet somewhat hollow. There was some discussion on whether this was corked, and it's possible. But it was not obviously corked. A previous bottle 2 years ago was substantially better.

This was exactly as I remembered the last bottle 2+ years ago. Fantastic aged cabernet. Lots of leather and red fruit on the nose. The palate is cherry and red fruit. There is a sweet earthy richness to it, imagine stamping some black cherries into loamy earth. This wine was still quite alive despite its age. This bottle was drinking very well, although it's likely on the downward slope right now.

This was a really good showing for this wine. The mint/eucalyptus agreed with the fresh red fruit, and there's leather, earth and smoke mixed in. This was barely edged out by a 1990 Silverado cab in the same flight.

The funk on this wine stood out the most. It had some feral components to it. There was some faded red fruit. All in all, it was still plenty complex and intriguing.

This seemed to be one of those Mondavi bottles that are elegant and balanced, and don't have a whole lot of interest. There's nothing to complain about here, it just needs . . . more.

Either heat damaged or over the top, alcoholic and big.

Classic aged Sauternes. Orange rind, baking spices, good acidity.

Wow, I'm so glad I've only bought 1 of these in my life. Modern is an understatement, at least after drinking aged Dunn, Heitz and Mondavi.

All I can say is that this wine is very pretty. This wine was elegant and sly in a different way than I've experienced. There was a lot of crisp red fruit.

This was consistent with my experience of Insignia. There is great complexity, and also robust fruit that is in harmony with the rest of the wine.

2008 H Blin & Co Champagne Brut Millésimé 91 Points
France, Champagne
This champagne is right in my wheel house. Toasty rich oak and yeast, lemon curd, strong acid. Vibrant and slightly deep.

2013 Kistler Chardonnay Trenton Roadhouse 93 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
This is a fairly restrained Kistler. The spicy oak is not heavy, and there is ample acidity. There is a lot of golden fruit. This is a really nice chardonnay.
