Premier Cru, a blend of 35% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier. Harmonious and fresh, pleasant flavours, well integrated dosage, rounded and supple.
Tasted blind. Decanted. Delightful freshness and minerality, especially in the context of the warm 2015 vintage, beautifully reflecting the vineyard’s position high up on the hill. Apple and citrus fruit, flowers, sligtly earthy, good flavour intensity, lovely definition and length.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasted blind. Decanted. Much more reticent than the Corton-Charlemagne 2014 which preceded it, not as open and generous. Shows relatively little of itself right now, relatively light body, more abour precision and elegance than power and weight.
Tasted blind. Decanted. Classic left bank profile, ripe black fruit, leather and tobacco, well balanced tannins and a modicum of Margaux elegance. Mature but with time in hand.
Tasted blind. Decanted. Typical Margaux elegance is compromised slightly by a touch of warmth. Exactly what you’d expect of Pavillon Rouge in a vintage like 2003.
Tasted blind. Decanted. Identical to my previous note. Rounded, supple and easy. It was clearly very warm on the Bages plateau in 2003, but this wine deals with it well - nothing jammy and nothing green. Fully mature.
Tasted blind. Decanted. The style immediately reminded me of Léoville-Barton 1996, and the quality is not far behind, really amazing for La Réserve. From a very cold cellar (10°C all year round, 100% humidity) and this has clearly helped the wine to retain more of its fruit, even if it is otherwise quite gravelly. Saint-Julien personified.
Tasted blind. Decanted. Classic TBA concentration and character, dried fruit, honey and Alpine herbs. I guessed Rheingau, which may be taken as a compliment.
