Introduction

An educational visit with François Millet. A wet 2018 spring was followed by a hot and dry summer summer. An August 30th harvest was the earliest at Vogüé since 1895! Everything was ripe - flesh, seeds and skin. The wine is 50-75% done with ML, based on cuvee, but there is so little malic acid that it is barely apparent. François says this is a vintage that truly expresses the perfect summer - not too hot (despite the very hot 2018) and not too dry (despite the drought).

  • 2018 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny

Barrel tasting at the domaine. An incredibly dark color made me expect all black fruit, but there is at least as much red as black cherry here. Very ripe aromas, then more complex palate with impressive balance already and a very bright finish. This can be a great version of the cuvee if the savory character dominates. 89-92 point potential.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Only 50% ML complete. Enchanting aromas of red and black cherry with red berry notes. Wonderful spice and floral support. Massive on palate with the malic acid giving a slightly rough edge for now. But otherwise so rich, dense and long with 91-94 point potential.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. 80-90% ML complete. Stunning red and black berry aromas with fully savory spice. Similar flavor profile with incredible brightness and length. Also incredibly dark, but so texturally exciting with silky tannins and great length. Wow, 96-97 point potential.

  • 2018 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Massive black fruit throughout, but with nothing hard or misplaced. Near elegant, and when can that be said about young Bonnes Mares? Long and complex finish showing both black and red cherry with savory spice just starting to emerge. Great 93-96 point potential.

Barrel tasting at the domaine. Comes across as less dense than Amoureuses or Bonnes Mares to start, but this starts expanding quickly into a near powerhouse. So rich and complex already. Exciting 96-98 point potential.
