Introduction

The Gentlemens Dinner has become one of the absolute high points of the year for me. A gang of old comrades from university get together to create one fabolous, over the top dinner. Focus is on the food but the wines of course play an important part as well. This years theme was seafood - lobster, crayfish, oysters, caviar, turbot etc.

Flight 1 - While cooking (1 Note)

One cannot cook well without wine...

Flight 2 - Oysters et al (3 Notes)

Oysters naturale and poached with cucumber, beurre blanc and caviar

Razor-shell clam with grape and flower sallad

Crab claws ”jumbo” with mayonnaise

Arctic king-crab with pea puré, dill oil and dill foam

  • NV Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve 92 Points

    France, Champagne

    2008 base

Just as good as last time. Repeating my first note: For me a perfect blend of salty, chalky fraicheur and beautiful yellow and green fruit. Quite complex and layered with slight hints of maturity but the cool steeliness of the 2008 vintage at its core. This is delicious now but can go for many years yet.

  • 2008 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Had two bottles of this and one had more than a streak of premox but the other delivered well on par with expectations. A bit closed at first but opened up with lovely white flowers, peach, lemon, apples and just hints of butterscotch. Intense minerality combines with zippy acids for a very fresh and energetic feeling. Underneath good substance, detail and complexity. Long finish with intense, almost sparkling minerals, lemon and lime. Masterclass chablis!

  • 2012 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs 94 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Always great to have a Felseneck from S-F. Never dissapoints. This is starting to shed its baby fat. Nose of petrol, chalk, pear, rubber, peach and lime. Some herbs as well: basil, mint. On the palate dark and rich but balanced by a still intense acidty. Lots of detail. Great lenght with more iron and petrol.

Flight 3 - Lobster, caviar and crayfish (2 Notes)

Toast SPS - baked marrow on brioche topped with caviar - the one dish that returns every year

Grilled crayfish with carrots, lardo and browned butter

Lobster soup with onion and apples

Flight 4 - Scallops and turbot (2 Notes)

Fried scallops with browned soy butter and shitake

Poached turbot with white wine sauce, trout roe and caviar

  • 2015 Evening Land Vineyards Chardonnay La Source Seven Springs Vineyard 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Quite high expectations for this and while it is a nice wine it’s still a bit of a let-down. Rich and powerfull on both nose and palate with lots of vanilla, ripe, yellow fruit, smoke and wax, but lacking detail and elegance. Too low acids, too much oak and sweet fruit. No match for the burgs tonight.

  • 2009 Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Had two bottles of this. One was fantastic, the other a bit tired. Note is for the good bottle.

Nose of litchie, yellow and green apples, lime and chalk. With time flowers, vanilla, light wax and butter. On the palate very energetic and playfull but with good depth and detail. Just hints of maturity, mostly evident as emerging complexity. Several layers to be explored. Good lengt with super fresh acidity, more litchie, chalk and iron. Very, very good.

Flight 5 - Finally some red (1 Note)

Pike-perch Bourgignon with Jerusalem artichoke puré

  • 2010 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Lovely transparent red. Detailed nose with clay, sour cherries, lingonberries and cranberries. Just hints of darker stuff as well. Good detail with baking spice, clove, five-spice and bay leaf. On the palate great energy with fresh acids, light tannin and silky red fruit. A bit tart, but not in a bad way - lends authority and stature and enhances the elegant expression. Good lenght with more clay, some iron and slowly fading fruit. Very nice. No hurry to drink this but feels open for buissness.

Flight 6 - Cheesus (1 Note)

Roquefort

Closing

Best dinner yet! Everyone really pulled out their very best kitchen skills and every course delivered. My personal favourite was poached oyster with cucumber, beurre blanc and caviar. Sublime!
