Introduction

An amazing tour of the cellars and private tasting at Pol Roger, conducted by Axel Gillery, who was also our host at the subsequent dinner. We had been invited by Eric and Marianne de Bruijn, the Dutch importers of Pol Roger, and we were joined by Erik, Anja, Koen, Cas, Natasja and Raymond. The 1921 was an unexpected and amazing highlight.

Flight 1 - tasting (7 Notes)

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve 91 Points

    France, Champagne

An equal blend of the three classical varieties, four years sur lattes, base vintage 2014, 25% vin de réserve from the three previous vintages, 8 gr/l dosage. Creamy texture, harmonious, warm Pinot spice and ripe lemon fruit on the nose, hints of peach and strawberry on the palate, floral, silky bubble, rounded finish.

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Rich Demi-Sec 90 Points

    France, Champagne

An equal blend of the three classic varieties, three years sur lattes, dosage of 34 gr/l, followed by one year post disgorgement ageing to integrate the sugar. Creamy lemon, gentle sweetness, floral and lively, supple and fresh rather than cloying, good length.

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Pure Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Zero dosage, also an equal blend of the three classical varieties, but more mature base wines than the White Foil to compensate for the absence of sugar. Floral and fresh expression on the nose, nutty, linear but rounded, minerally and long finish.

  • 2012 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Blancs 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Made exclusively with grapes from all six Grand Cru villages. Beautifully ripe and rounded but elegant and intense, lime zest, smoky, hint of vanilla pod, seamless and silky, harmonious, lovely oval shape on the palate, very good resonance and length. Excellent.

  • 2012 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

A blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. A really powerful wine, deep and spicy, cheese rind, fresh and well balanced, rich fruit flavours, razor-sharp acidity (especially for a 2012) but generous at the same time, quite chewy at present, very good length. Needs 2-3 years in the cellar.

  • 2012 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Rosé 93 Points

    France, Champagne

The same wine as the vintage brut, but made with 15% red wine from Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Cumières. Violets and candied orange, lemony and linear, firmly structured, really tight and intense, very good smoky length. Needs two to three years to find its feet, but should turn out very well.

  • 2008 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Tightly wrought, powerful and closed, bracing acidity, an iron fist in a velvet glove, great depth and complexity, but almost everything is hidden and it really needs time and oxygen to show itself. Drink from 2025.

Flight 2 - dinner (6 Notes)

  • NV Pol Roger Champagne Brut Réserve 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Magnum. Disgorged approximately one year ago, 2013 base vintage. More creamy and honeyed than the single bottle (base vintage 2014) tasted this afternoon, very gentle and flowing, good length. Elegant, rounded and complete.

  • 2008 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind. Pale golden colour, pin-prick bubbles; expressive nose, creamy lemon and some nutty evolution, piercing chalky salinity, almost like a Blanc de Blancs at present, I am wondering whether the smokiness comes from the terroir or from Pinot Noir? Linear and long, great acidity and energy, youthful, impressive.

  • 1999 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Rosé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind. Mature pélure d’oignon colour, orangey, pin-prick bubbles; wonderful earthy and mushroomy Pinot Noir complexity, clearly from a riper vintage, candied fruit, wonderful lively freshness, dried fruit on the finish, good length. Drink soon.

  • 2002 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind. Perfectly classical style, complex and complete but very shy, fresh, apples, evolving but not expressive at all right now. Will it open up again?

  • 1921 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut 100 Points

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind. From the house reserves, recorked and topped up every 10-15 years. Mature but lively colour, very gentle mousse; mature but fresh nose, still some red berries left, smoky and beautifully harmonious and relaxed and flowing, very gentle bitters, no sense of fatigue at all, long and poised, very subtle, crème patissière, red apple, perfect in itself. A mind-blowing, earth-shattering experience. No words of mine can do justice to it. We guessed 1985...

Tasted blind. Identical to my previous note.
