Introduction

Epic wine Tasting, paired with exquisite food and an amazing lineup

Flight 1 - In the cellar, going through a few chardonnay offerings (3 Notes)

Paired with cheeses

  • 2004 Penfolds Chardonnay Yattarna 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Beautifully balanced wine, steely nose. Lots of different notes on the nose that meld together so nicely and makes it hard to pinpoint them individually. I get a touch of sweet apple, high toned peach and a nuttiness. In the mouth, everything comes together so well. I loved this wine and it held up over a range of temperatures. Great structure and balance.

  • 2002 Penfolds Chardonnay Yattarna 86 Points

    Australia, South Australia

I suspected this bottle was off. On the nose candied peach and subtle cat urine. Get some over ripeness. Much more overt fruitiness than the 04. This wine tastes like it’s had a quick evolution. Wine turned flabby when closer to room temp.

  • 2006 Penfolds Chardonnay Bin 311 91 Points

    Australia, South Eastern

Great chardonnay. Beautiful steely pear notes. With a ½ hour of aeration, the wine displayed tart honeyed lemon custard. There was a touch of vanilla and nutty character. The wine was accompanied by a nice backbone of acidity.

Flight 2 - Red wines (11 Notes)

Waygu Beef along with many other delicious foods served alongside these reds

  • 1982 Penfolds Grange 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

This wine is drinking at its peak. Exceptional aged grange with a distinctly bordeaux nose. On the nose cigar box, cedar and a nice strong core of pure sweet raspberry. Enormous wine for its age. On the palette california pinot like in texture and weight. Silky smooth wine I could drink all night. If you have a bottle of this wine, I would suggest drinking it. I don’t believe it can get any better. 95

  • 1986 Penfolds Grange 96 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

Tied for #2 WOTN for me. Still tight. Has years ahead of improvement. Dark profile with a very complex intoxicating nose. This wine and the 82 both displayed a bordeaux like character on the nose. Smoky oak, sweet black raspberries and a touch of vanilla. Even though it was still somewhat tight, there was massive fruit to conceal it. 96 for tonight, potential 97 or higher in the future (should be near perfect in a few years).

  • 1990 Penfolds Grange 97 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

This wine started closed off. Dark brooding nose that wasn’t very expressive initially. On the palette lush and fruit forward. With underlying hardcore blueberry. Towards the end of the night this wine had completely come together and was drinking at its peak. This was the first grange I noticed a touch of licorice on the nose. Sweet and seductive caramel, chocolate and plum on the palette. The wine really started to sing after 6 hours in the glass. When it finally opened, this wine had so much of everything and it was very nicely integrated. This really surprised a lot of us with its development and ended up the consensus Grange WOTN. Started off behind 86 and 02 for me and then really showed well at the end of the evening. 97

  • 1994 Penfolds Grange 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

Simpler nose than all prior vintages. Dark red fruits and some earthiness. In the mouth, it delivers much better than the nose. Ripe sexy and seductive red fruits. Great concentration. Very easy to drink, another beautiful grange. 94

  • 1995 Penfolds Grange 91 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

Dark fruit profile with a scorched earth and licorice nose. Good in its own right, but pales in comparison to prior granges. Lush syrupy dark fruits with considerable tannins showing. So far the most extracted wine of the evening. 91

  • 1999 Penfolds Grange 92 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

Powerful and perfumed on the nose with copious dark fruits. A mixture of rich black raspberry, chocolate and black licorice on the nose. Nose is very intoxicating, I keep going back to sniff this wine. Such a big wine. Very powerful, dense and balanced on the palette. This Grange lacks the extra oomph. So far this and 95 are at the bottom of my list. This wine is reminiscent of a simpler version of the 1990 Grange. 92.

  • 2000 Penfolds Grange 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

The most dense and powerful nose of the night so far. Notice a touch of heat on first whiff with hardcore blackberry and blueberry. In the mouth, another balanced effort. Sweet lush dark fruits. The sweetest dry wine of the night. Really a beautiful Grange. 93.

  • 2001 Penfolds Grange 94 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

Reserved blueberry and scorched earth, a much tighter nose than 99 and 00. I also get the first serious hint of menthol. Impressive dark fruit. Lush and low acid style, seems like a better version of the 95. This wine was tough to judge, it needed more aeration. 94.

  • 2002 Penfolds Grange 96 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines.

Tight and beautiful on the nose, alluding to so much promise. An infant as you can imagine. This is a complete wine, got a menthol note and a mixture of intense dark red and black fruits. So tight but seriously endowed fruit. I believe this wine is a legend in the making. Tied for 2nd place (behind 86 and 90) for Grange WOTN. 96.

  • 2004 Penfolds Bin 60A 98 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Had this wine during a Grange Vertical tasting (82, 86, 90, 94, 95, 99, 00, 01 & 02). Worked my way from the 82 to the 02 with sniffing and drinking. Then when back through all the wines. This wine was tasted last.

My overall wine of the night. Smelled like a top flight Diamond mountain cab. Bell peppers and beautiful vegetal notes. Higher toned red fruits with great intensity. Cherry and blackberry on the nose. In the mouth rich, sweet and savory. Deep red fruits with a sweet, toasty oak finish. Great extract and mouth feel. This wine delivers at a very high level on all facets. Such an impressive complex wine. Absolutely to die for.

  • 2004 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Block 42 96 Points

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

So much going on with this wine. Very distinctive and hard to describe. Incredibly thick and unctuous. So dark, so reserved I would love to have this wine in 20 years. Notes of fresh cut grass on the nose. So much weight in the mouth, but also excellent acidity that creates a lightness. It’s like liquid velvet. The finish goes on and on and on. Very hard to notice the tannins under the opulence of this baby. 96 is for now, but this will be better.

Closing

Unreal experience, the best wine tasting lineup I have ever been a part of.
