Ridge Night and Burgers

Aureole Restaurant, NYC

Introduction

A tasting of Ridge's Rhone style and Zinfandel wines. Meaning we skipped the Bordeaux styled wines. We had dinner at Aureole in NYC, and I thought it would be fun to have these wines with their Cheeseburger. We had a white wine starter from WA state, followed by 5 red Ridge wines.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2016 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc 91 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Just by accident, once again, I had the 2015 and 2016 vintages on back to back nights. And once again, I feel the 2016s are just a notch behind the 2015s. Still I always enjoy this wine. Vintage after vintage.

Flight 2 (5 Notes)

  • 2016 Ridge Petite Sirah Lytton Estate 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Popped n' poured at a NYC restaurant. It was the first red wine of the night. Not particularly enjoyable on the first sip. It really opened up over the course of 25 minutes. I have one more bottle, and I really think it would benefit by being open for 30 minutes before drinking. Nice spice notes. Less alcohol (13.8%) than I was expecting.

  • 2016 Ridge Demostene Ranch 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

My second favorite of the Ridge wines we had. Half Zin, half Carignane, and only 13% alcohol. Licorice and Black Cherry notes on the palate. It went very well with my cheeseburger. Medium bodied, and a medium length finish.

  • 2016 Ridge Wild Cattle Creek 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

85% Zinfandel, 10% Carignane, 5% Petite Sirah. 13.8% Alcohol. I was expecting more from this...Out of the 5 Ridge wines we had, I had this 4th. Nothing wrong with it, it just didn't stand out either.

  • 2017 Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

100% Zinfandel. 15.1% Alcohol. Our only 100% Zin of the night. Something has to finish last, it was my least favorite of the night. Just not enough "umph" for a pure Zin. It did carry the alcohol well though, as it didn't taste hot.

  • 2017 Ridge Geyserville 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

Our last wine of the night, and sadly, I was already finished with my food. I think it would have gone great with my cheeseburger. The group favorite. It may have benefited from being last, as it was open the longest.

Closing

I think all the wines went very well with the cheeseburger and fries. But the group favorite was the 2017 Geyserville. As for 2nd favorite and least favorite, there was no universal agreement among the 10 of us.
