This was our bimonthly tasting group with 11 in attendance. This time of year we're always losing a couple people to colds and flu. We had a good mix of wines and some excellent food from Don's menu. I also have to point out that we get the best service and are always treated wonderfully here. Loved it.
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. It's been just about a year since first having this. The evolution is significant already. I love where this has gone stylistically. These are so bright and energetic, lemon out front, wispy minerality, smoky, toasted, pears. The palate is medium bodied, very crisp with good depth and poise, love the citrus tones and background orchard fruits, modest oak and clean stone minerality and long finish. Always a winner and a go wine. Probably in the optimum window, but can go for 5 years.

Light medium gold color. Followed a glass over an hour. The nose has a mix of citrus and tropical fruits; lychee, tangerine, peach with floral aromatics. The palate has citrus oil, peach, tangerine, medium bodied, but it comes up a bit angular on the finish. I'm thinking this was better a year or two ago. 89 to 90pts.

Medium plus red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Drank this as part of a nice trio including a '12 Rivers Marie Old Vines Summa and a '13 Brick House Dijonnaise. This was my favorite of what was a very good and competitive flight. The Ceras is just so harmonious; earthy, red fruits, cherry and clove on the nose. The palate is medium plus bodied, lovely silky texture, cherry and dark red berry notes, earthy with great NSG like spices. Excellent 93+pts.

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Drank this as part of a nice trio including a '12 Antica Terra Ceras and a '13 Brick House Dijonnaise. This was a very good and competitive flight. The RM is a bigger style than I prefer, but there is an waful lot to like including in terms of complexity. This has that ripe sour cherry, Dr. Pepper nose, which tends to back off over time to show more nuance, orange peel, wild strawberry. The palate is fairly consistent, medium full bodied, ripe, spicy, black cherry, orange peel, pomegrante. 91+ to 92pts.

Drank this as part of a nice trio including a '12 Rivers Marie Old Vines Summa and a '12 Antica Terra Ceras. This was my favorite of what was a very good and competitive flight. My second favorite, just behind the Ceras was this. I love the Burgundian style, very nuanced, aromatic nose. The nose shows roses, orange peel, wild strawberry, rose water, spices. The palate is medium bodied, a little leaner with with a touch of firmness to the tannins, tart cherry, floral, blood orange. This should be even better in a couple years. 92+ to 93pts.

Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Certainly the best bottle to date of what has been a surprisingly under performing vintage of Clos des Papes. This bottles was pretty, understated, but in a good way. I like the style, medium bodied, with a nose of lovely red cherries, earth, raspberry, subtle garrigue and spice. The palate is soft, raspberry juice, garrigue, dried spices, cherry, white pepper. Nice.

Very dark red color. Decanted for 45 minutes and open for an hour; drank a glass over an hour plus. Part of a flight of '00 Cantemerle and '01 Gazin. This was our clear favorite of the group. Nicely perfumed on the nose, leather, funk, horse saddle, violets, cassis and boysenberry. The palate is soft with fine grained integrating tannins, leather, funk, cassis, light graphite. The nose is the star, but the palate is still classic 20 year old Bordeaux.

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Part of a flight of '98 Smith Haut Lafitte and '01 Gazin, with this coming in number two tonight and getting better with time in glass. The nose has a sweet cassis quality, blue fruits, quite earthy. The palate is dark cherry, saddle, wood spice, medium plus bodied, with some firmness to the tannins. This could used a little decant time.

Sweet, ultra ripe and extracted style, blackberry liqueur, blueberry syrup, blackberry syrup on the palate and nose. Full bodied and spicy with lots of wood to shed. Not really my cup of wine.

Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over 40 minutes. Very aromatic and floral nose as the Viognier really comes through, bacon fat, umami, earthy, fairly herbaceous, black cherry. Good.

NV Philippe Prié Champagne Tradition Brut
France, Champagne
Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Consistent with previous notes. Green apples, wet stones, pear, the palate adds some chalk and citrus to the bright acidity. These just have nice personality. 91pts.
