Introduction

Our Winter meeting proved to be quite interesting. I was recovering from the flu in the days leading up to it. My sense of taste was still a bit off so I was not able to really write detailed notes and I definitely didn't feel like my normal self. That being said there were some interesting wines that were all clustered closely together in scores. We also had some delicious food with homemade pretzels, crab cakes, cheese and crackers, smoked salmon, cupcakes and chocolate lava cake for dessert.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2016 Sans Liege The Offering 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

Tasted blind. Aromas of cherry, cranberry and earth led to flavors of cherry and raspberry garnacha. Ends with a 20 second finish. I guess an Oregon Pinot Noir but was way off obviously. Got 94 points and Wine Spectator and I'm not seeing this. Still a nice wine but not a re-buy for $30. I gave this 91 points and it finished 4th on the night.

  • 2015 Bodegas Alvarez de Toledo Bierzo Senorio de la Antigua Finca Cabanela 89 Points

    Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo

Tasted blind. Had some cherry and cranberry on the nose. Flavors of cherry, earth and currant on the palate. Ends with a 10-15 second finish with earthy cherry notes. I guessed a Mencia and got that. Not a bad wine for the money but not in the same league at the 2012 we had a few meetings back. I gave this 89 points and it finished 5th on the night.

  • 2017 FitVine Pinot Noir 84 Points

    USA, California

Tasted blind. Aromas of cherry and burnt wood. Got some cherry on the palate. This was thin and fell off mid palate. I did not care for this wine. Was a clear difference between this and the other wines and probably the worst wine brought to a meeting I can remember in a while. I gave this 84 points and it finished last on the night.

  • 2015 Bodegas La Cana Albariño 90 Points

    Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas

Tasted blind. Aromas of honey, mineral and citrus on the nose of this. More citrus, mineral, slate on the palate with just a touch of sweetness. Ends with a 15-20 second mineral driven finish. Was a bit stumped with this wine. Thought it was the wine I brought at first but the next wine was mine so that could not be. Settled on a California Chardonnay but I knew that was wrong. I gave this 90 points and it finished second on the night.

  • 2016 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Monopole Clásico 91 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Tasted blind. Aromas of citrus, roasted nut and sherry. Flavors of mineral, lime and sherry. This had a very refreshing acidity. Perfect for the warm weather but drinking it in the middle of winter! Go figure. Still really enjoyed this wine. Gave it 91 points and it finished 3rd on the night.

    Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT

Tasted blind. Aromas of cherry, plum and currant. Flavors of cherry, plum and currant. Ends with a 25 second finish with plum notes. Thought this was a Washington Cab but boy was I wrong. Liked this a lot. Very easy drinking. I gave this 91 points and it finished 1st overall.

Closing

All the wines with the except of the Fitvine were all in and around the same score, plus or minus 2 points. If I had to chose one wine I'd definitely go with the Gran Appasso, which I found impressive. Until next time!
