Flight 1 - STARTER WHITES (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - MY "NOTHING IN COMMON" BLIND FLIGHT (3 Notes)

  • 1995 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera 91 Points

Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero

Rich red raspberries and oak. Seems a bit more simple in the flavor profile than the last time I tried this wine. Nice long finish, however. Good structure insures a long life. Seemed almost Zin-like at this tasting.

  • 1991 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Very dark for a Burgundy of 7 years old. Black raspberries and cherries. Very nicely extracted, and yet very elegant. The proverbial "iron fist in a velvet glove". Some minerals and smoke added to the mix to add complexity. A wonderful, yet young, wine with tons of room to improve. Still waiting to show those secondary aromas.

  • 1981 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Medium red with an amber rim. Classic Beaucastel aromas of animal fur, smoke, earth, leather, and a solid beam of sweet fruit still clinging on. Good grip for a wine of this age. Not too bretty, either. An excellent wine.

Flight 3 - DOUG'S BLIND CAYMUS FLIGHT (3 Notes)

  • 1994 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark, bright red in color. Thick, rich, creamy, milky, red fruit jam on a toasted oak cracker. Very user friendly, easy to understand wine. Maybe not very complex, but very "hedonistic".

  • 1995 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Another typical Caymus wine. Lots of up front fruit and oak, but perhaps a bit more structured than the fruit bomb 1994. Wines like this are fun to taste, but hard to consume in large amounts, as they tend to get lumbering.

  • 1994 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A bit tight right now. Not showing much on the nose, but obviously very extracted and much more elegant than the regular Napa offering. With air, the wine opened up to show some berries, earth and complex minerals. Needs time, but shows potential.

Flight 4 - MISC BLIND FLIGHT (3 Notes)

Flight 5 - 1995 BORDEAUX (1 Note)

For some reason, I only have notes on the wine I brought, the '95 Angelus. But the following wines were tasted:
Smith Haut Lafitte
Leoville Barton
Leoville Poyferre
Clerc Milon
Pichon Baron

  • 1995 Château Angélus 97 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

WOW! Inky dark in color. A deep, dark, brooding monster of a wine in need of some serious cellar time. Thick fruitcake, oak, and chocolate. Complex and concentrated with hefty tannins. The nose was a bit closed. Do not open another for a decade!

Flight 6 - MORE BLIND WINES (2 Notes)

  • 1997 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 87 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Quite a dissapointment given the hype on this wine. A nice, medium bodied wine. Cherry, oak, high acidity, some earth. Overall inpression was that of a rather nice Chianti Classico... no where near the concentration expected of a 1990 Brunello. This tasting was done after many flights of 1995 Bordeauxs, so perhaps palate fatigue was at fault here. Or, perhaps this wine has closed down. Try agin in 2005?

  • 1995 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted after many flights of 1995 Bordeauxs, so palate fatigue prevented a detailed analysis. What I remember was an inky dark wine of immense concentration. A bit closed on the node perhaps, but full cassis, herbs, and smokey licorice on the palate. Very long finish. Accessable, but the fair amount of tannins beg for time. Appears to be excellent.
