Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2015 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers 92 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Not very expressive on the nose, flower and young fruit notes. On the palate green apple, young tropical fruits - as young fresh pineapple and a note of flint/ gravel. Well balanced, rich and lingering on with nut and tropical fruit notes. No oxidation. Needs some more time in the cellar, or early opening, and should keep well, 92 points for now.

  • 1994 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Blanc De L'Orée 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

You must appreciate the style but this is superb oxidative Marsanne. Straw-yellow color. Wonderful bouquet of bee-wax, kumquat, macadamia nuts, dried apricot, lemon zest and much more. Well balanced on the palate with great freshness. Oxidative style as dry sherry. Notes of melon skin.

  • 2001 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

No. 1 Wine of the Night, outstanding Hermitage Blanc confirming the capacity of this wine to age well. Bright golden-yellow color. Amazing, big and complex nose with great delineation. Notes as honey-melon, ripe apricots, Macadamia nuts, butter, honey-comb and lemon-zest. Rich, dense and mouth-filling on the palate with good acidity and a hint of oxidation. Excellent structure, balance and length. Well-kept bottles should show well for another 10 years.

  • 2003 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Truly representing well-made Northern Rhône Syrah. Ruby red color. Dark fruits, horse-stable, earth, tar, herbs and spices in the nose. Technically well made and polished. Stylish and well-structured. On the full-bodied palate Provençal herbs and ripe black fruits. Long lingering on with fruits and secondary notes. This is alive-and-kicking!

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 1999 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Classic expression of Côte-Rôtie with that typical haunting perfume. In Guigal-style; technically well-build, focused and elegant. Complex nose reveals the Syrah-pepper, fresh prunes as well as notes of tobacco, grilled bacon, meat and mineral. Full-bodied, silky and elegant on the concentrated palate with dark fruits and 'band-aid' in the finish. Tannin not fully resolved. Might well further improve with time and gain point(s), now: 94+

  • 1989 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 98 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

My first experience Guigal La-la's and specifically this wine was in 2016 when I gave 100 points. Great to have this tonight again (Thanks S!), between other fabulous bottles from the same region.
Stunning masculine wine with great precision. Notes of blood, grilled meat, band-aid, iron and bacon. Smooth, silky and polished. Many years of life ahead.
