Introduction

Virtual COVID-19 tasting with Alex and Martine. Thanks to the Moreaus for putting up with us. Wines opened that I didn't tasted included Moreau 2012 Maltroie, 2010 Maltroie, 2010 Champs Gain, 2013 Morgeot and 2017 (Meursault) Poruzot. Also Louis Latour 2014 Chassagne Cailleret and Maltroye 2001 Morgeot Vigne Blanche.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2014 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sous Roche Dumay Blanc 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Sweet apple on nose and palate with floral notes. Very crisp, bright finish with good+ balance, good length. Rich kindly shared these “leftovers” from last night for today’s tasting.

  • 2012 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

In sensational 12/13/14 vertical, each getting a few hours of air before tasting. Apple and baked apple with both sweet and savory spice. Starts out rich and mostly ripe, but finishes with a long, bright, nearly tart finish. Very good now, still possibly further upside.

  • 2013 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

In sensational 12/13/14 vertical, each getting a few hours of air before tasting. My first time trying this wine since just after release. Clearly my favorite of the vertical, but this was not a "typical" Chassagne, but rather a perfect embodiment of what a great 2013 can be. Floral and spicy with poached pear throughout, tropical fruit and marzipan in the middle and a ultra bright, minerally finish. Signs of botrytis are starting to emerge, adding layers of complexity. This is Old School white Burgundy that few producers dare to make any more. Other tasters thought it the least interesting of the flight, I think it is a brilliant wine with decades of life to evolve.

  • 2014 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

In sensational 12/13/14 vertical, each getting a few hours of air before tasting. Still, a hint of reduction at first. First time tasting since this was bottled. Broad cross-section of apple aromas and flavors with floral and savory spice notes. Near perfect balance with excellent length. Finishes slightly austere today, but this has the quiet reserve of a great classic Chassagne, with so much upside, better 2024 forward.
