Introduction

We organized a ZOOM tasting to try a few DRCs. It was fun and educational.

Flight 1 - DRCs (5 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Bricking on the rim. Perfectly mature complex nose displaying ripe red fruit, raspberry, sour cherry, strong stem, sous bois, caramel, Vosne spice, perfume, cinnamon and iron. Perfectly integrated palate, very finely layered ripe red fruit, silky and polished, beautiful balance and harmony, bright acidity, iron mineral, no noticeable tannins and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with cinnamon and iron at the end. Not as rich and complex as the 02 La Tache but perhaps drinking better at the moment, simply delicious.

  • 2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

2009 RSV Slightly coiled nose displaying concentrated black fruit with a hint of red, blackberry, black cherry, strawberry and rhubarb tart, noticeable stem, licorice, smoked meat, espresso bean, a hint of Vosne spice and earth. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of coiled yet concentrated black fruit, rich and big yet silky and focused, good acidity, strong mineral, showing a bit of tannins/structure, and a long concentrated black fruit driven finish with stem and dark spices at the end. It is not terribly expressive and not as polished and precise as the 09 Richebourg. This can easily improve for another three decades, perhaps like the 90 DRCs but not as ripe as there is a sense of coolness.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

The color shows maturity and the nose clearly reflects it. Beautiful mature nose displaying subtle black and red fruit, sous cherry, black cherry, strawberry, light caramel, sous bois, soy, a hint of stem, sap, iron mineral, caramel, Vosne spice and crushed rock. Already showing beautifully integrated palate, nicely layered subtle black and red fruit, silky and fluid, good acidity and mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a medium to long sweet black and red fruit driven finish with sap and sour cherry at the end. With air, it gains weight and gets sweeter. The maturity level and the expression are much closer to the 02 RSV. Although enjoyable, the weakest wine of the evening, not the wine that I would seek.

  • 2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Youthful expressive nose displaying rich concentrated black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, espresso, liquid smoke, strong sap, rose, coffee, charred steak, stem, Vosne spice and limestone mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe black fruit, rich yet opulent yet pure and precise, also really silky and fluid, a perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with a hint of stem and Vosne spice at the end. Showing better precision than the 09 RSV. This can easily improve for another two or three decades. Perhaps with the best material.

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Expressive perfectly mature nose displaying ripe back fruit, blackberry, black cherry, a hint of stem, tea, espresso, Vosne spice, rose, dark spices, brown sugar, cep and earth. Fully integrated palate, layers upon layers of ripe black fruit, rich yet silky and harmonious, bright acidity, strong earthy mineral, nicely integrated tannins and a long ripe black fruit driven finish with tea and Vosne spice at the end. Although this is more concentrated and complex, the 02 RSV seems to be drinking slightly better at the moment.
