Vice Versa Wines - Mostly 2018 with a few others

Introduction

Amazing tasting at VV. Always one of my favorites, they are one of the most consistently high quality wineries out there. What sets them apart is their absolute commitment to quality from the owner on down. It is one of the few wineries where the owner is involved in every single aspect of the winemaking.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2018 Vice Versa Chardonnay Platt Vineyard 97 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Fabulous wine. White flowers, citrus, pear and wet rocks predominate the nose. Stunningly fresh and pure, it shows beautiful full fruit and vivacity, just exploding with flavor. Lively and energetic, this is at once powerful and lithe. The mid palate is full of depth and the flavors hit every corner of the mouth. Finish is long and sophisticated with a nice mineral streak. Showing more fruit than the 2017 edition, but still spans the line beautifully between Burgundy and California's best.

  • 2018 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Steltzner Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Very dark and brooding in the glass, this wine immediately looks very serious. Nose of blackcurrant, cassis, spice box, dark flowers and hints of charred meat. Showing the superior texture of all VV wines, this is full bodied and muscular, showing lots of black/blue fruit along with a significant amount of deep earth driven flavors. Wonderfully layered, it has a firm tannin structure and is built to last. Finishes long and savory.

  • 2018 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Shows the stunning floral aromatics of Pritchard Hill. Violets, white flowers. iron, black cherries and spice box. Full bodied, very structured and powerful, this wine gets your attention. Interplays mineral driven flavors with pure blue and red fruit. Fresh and lively, it finishes with a ton of length. This needs some bottle age before it will come into its own. Lay it down for a while.

  • 2018 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Blueberries, raspberries, white flowers and crushed rock show off an expressive nose. A little redder in fruit profile than the other wines, this shows lovely full bodied purity and opulence. A bit softer than the other Beckstoffer offerings, this wine is highlighted by freshness and a suave, intoxicating personality. Nicely layered and already drinking quite well, it finishes long and a touch savory.

  • 2018 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard 97 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Huge, powerful wine loaded with potential. Aromatics of blackberries, cassis fruit, smoked meat, scorched earth and violets. Full bodied and packed with pure, gorgeous fruit with savory character, this is an exceptional reflection of the vineyard. Tannins are firm but fine grained, the texture is perfect and the structure is epic. Layers and layers of goodness that will need some time to unfurl. During the time I was at the tasting, this just kept getting better. Finishes super long. Lots of upside potential. 97+++

  • 2018 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard 98 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Stunning and classic TK notes of cassis, blueberries, violets and spice box. Wonderfully rich and intoxicating with opulent layers of perfect pure fruit and unreal layering and texture. Picks up mineral driven flavors as it progresses. This vintage has notable acidity, freshness and structure. I love how it is so incredibly powerful and full bodied, yet has no noticeable weight or heft. Spans the entire mouth with a complete mid palate and moves to a sensationally long finish. Would not be surprised to see it pop a perfect score with the critics.

  • 2016 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard 98 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

The 2018 VV Crane was in bottle shock (along with BBS and M7), so they were nice enough to open a 2016. Gorgeous cassis, violets, blueberries, minerality and stone notes strike you as you approach the glass. Super full bodied, rich and powerful, this has so much flavor and purity it is somewhat shocking to behold. The tannins are super refined and the wine is incredibly focused and fresh. Showing crazy layering and endless depth, it is going to keep getting better as time goes on. There is still a bit of alcohol showing on the finish, but just give this one a little more time unless you love the high octane firepower.

  • 2017 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon The Magnificent Seven 97 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This wine helped in changing my perception of the vintage. I've had so many meh and utterly disappointing (as well as a few tainted) wines from 2017, that I had mostly given up on it. Then this M7 walked into my life...

Beautiful aromatics of creme de cassis, black cherry, spice box, herbs and tobacco. Easily the most concentrated wine I've tasted from the vintage, this is opulent with serious depth of flavor and exceptional texture. Black and blue fruit are commingled with minerals and deep earthy notions. The tannins are fine grained and ripe, with better purity than this wine has any right to achieve in 2017. Finish is very long and savory. Such a great effort.
