Introduction

When TomHill and Susan came into town, Jen and I tried to express our appreciation for the "BarneyBox" of wines Tom brought for us in December by offering up a "TomTub" of grape juice. All four wines were just terrific. The Aubert was the consensus WOTN, and the Le Cadeau pinot was a terrific introduction to all of us to this producer.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2002 Arcadian Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

This was a terrific bottle of wine in a more burgundian, fleet-on-its-feet sort of way. Beautiful gold color with a hint of green. Nose was quite wonderful, with what TomHill identified as a celery element, along with my sense of white fruits and a sense of outdoor freshness, whatever I mean by that. A terrific medium-light palate feel with white and citrus fruit, minerals, and great acid balance. Top notch.

  • 2004 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Another Aubert, another extraordinary wine.... incredible hazy green-gold color, wonderful nose of lemon, minerals and a subtle smoky element. Palate is rich in the best way possible with wonderful flavors of citrus fruit and a hint of tropical qualities, as well as a subtle mineral element that adds to the impeccable balance of the big but brilliantly made wine. Great finish. What can ya say except these are superb.

  • 2004 Le Cadeau Pinot Noir Diversite 92 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

This was a terrific bottle of wine! Wonderful, complex nose of sous bois (forest floor), spices, and dark red fruit. Palate was medium bodied and had good earthy complexities to complement its red fruit. The balance was excellent -- it was not an overly acid pinot by any means. All in all a terrific introduction to this producer who has made a multi-dimensional pinot with individual character.

  • 1999 Tardieu-Laurent Cornas Coteaux 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Nose of rustic combinations of game, earth, minerals and dark fruit. Palate is medium-full and well-balanced. This bottle had a clear brett component which some folks liked and others didn't. Animal, dark earth and minerals, and dark fruit flavors combined with fine tannins made this a very rustic but, if you like that sort of thing, enjoyable bottle. Should have been paired with heartier food and it would have shown even better.
