Introduction

All tasted blind... didn't know the region to start.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; high intensity aromatics with red fruits, strawberry, slight cinnamon spice; palate is light-medium bodied, elegant red fruits, low tannins but still seems a bit youthful, palate seems like it still needs to open up as it doesn’t have the depth yet; finish seems medium length. I like this, though it seems a bit young still. My guess was that this was a Chambolle Musigny, possibly village level. 90-91
Day 2: This held up really nicely, still a lovely elegance and preponderance of red fruits.

  • 2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; deeper, darker fruited nose for a pinot; palate is solidly medium bodied, some iron, definitely more of a masculine feel, medium-plus acidity, low alcohol, tannins still present and structured; finish is medium length. Seems youthful and structured. I guessed Nuits St. Georges. 91+

  • 2006 Olivier Guyot Clos St. Denis 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; absolutely intense aromatics with black pepper spices, black cherry, red fruited; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, lovely fruits, medium tannins, simpler fruit on the palate than on the nose; finish is medium length. Intense, maybe not quite in the same elegant style as the others in the lineup but delicious nonetheless. 92
Day 2: The intensity and complexity has waned, and the rustic and rough sections of the wine show more. More enjoyable yesterday, but a good wine either day.

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; elegant red fruited nose, spices, a bit of musk but only to add complexity, nice depth; palate is light-medium bodied, again lovely red fruits, just very faint bitterness at first which resolves, nice depth; finish is solidly medium length. This is lovely, and in character reminds me of an elegant NSG such as Boudots, possibly at 1er cru quality level. On reveal, a lovely Corton, and a superbly balanced Burgundy. 92+

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Grèves 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; savory nose with some leafy greens, red fruited, elegant, complex; palate is light bodied, elegant red fruits, some spice, medium alcohol, medium acidity; finish is medium length. Lovely balanced wine. 90
Day 2: A bit simple, but still a lovely, classically made red burgundy. Enjoyable food wine. 89-90

  • 2005 Maison Alex Gambal Volnay 1er Cru Santenots Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Light ruby, slight bricking; high intensity aromatics with complex spice, red fruited, savory leafy component, a bit of spice, elegant with depth; palate is light bodied, red fruited, a bit polished but not at all ripe, balanced low-medium alcohol, medium to medium-plus acidity, less complex on the palate but more about the excellent mouthfeel and depth of fruit; finish is medium length. The nose is quite excellent, the palate simply very good. 90
