Dripstone Cliffs - May 2005

End of week drinks on the cliffs overlooking the Arafura Sea at sunset.

Wayne, Sally and Methinee. Point de Bique and Langharino cheeses with beef and lamb satays. The Point de Bique was a little bland for the wines while the Langharino and strays went well. The 92 St Henri was very nice and really improved after being allowed to breath for a good length of time.

  Very young definately a drink now, clear and bright, pale yellow in colour. Milld fruit on the nose, not particularly complex fairly plain. Mild acidity, relatively short on the palette with pleasant aftertaste. Fair to good quaffing wine.

• 1992 Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz - Cabernet 93 Points

  While it is just past its peak period, was still very good. Dark brick red colour, good nose really opened up after letting breath. Good complex flavour, blackcurrent and fruit, little spice or pepper but a slight smoky smell when first opened. Tannins were not overpowering and not to grippy. It had a good length on the palette and a strong finish.

• 2001 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna 89 Points

  Is full bodied without the typical South Australian pepper Shiraz. It was a dark red in colour with possible traces of brick red, clear and bright. Aroma was pleasant with blackcurrant and fruit, some oak but not to dominating, very pleasant bouquet. Flavour was frim with a good length without mouth puckering tannins.

  A little disappointing after previous bottles. Dark deep red/purple in colour, possible a little dull. A little closed to the nose with a spicy red berry aroma. Firm tannins without being to mouth puckering with a medium finish. It has almost an unbalanced taste. Overall it was not unpleasant but very plain and average for the price.

• 2004 Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc Regional Collection Marlborough 88 Points

  One of my favourite sauv blancs so I was a little disappointed with this bottle, not quite up to previous bottles. Bright , straw coloured. Fragrant complex nose, with a strong fruit, (tomato vine) aroma. Green crisp acid with a medium sweet taste. It had a medium body with a medium to long finish. Overall still very pleasant although this bottle seem a little tart possibly a bit to strong in the acid. Ovall still a very pleasant fragrant wine that is quite rich, if not slightly unbalanced.

  Clear and bright a very pale yellow colour. Fragrant on the nose with a mild herbal tones. Crisp acid with a medium length. Overall very pleasant.

• 2003 Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir 89 Points

  A very balanced and almost Pinot, bright and clear and red in colour. Good balance of tannins with a slight sweetness. Medium length on the palette with a good after tasts.

  Clear and bright pale straw colour. Good bouquet with mild acid. Medium length with a pleasant after taste. Resonabile wine for the price.
