Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

The nose is much more interesting the the palate here. Aromas are intense and layered with meaty black cherry, herb and spice. The palate is more straightforward and light-to-medium in body.

  • 2002 Dominique Laurent Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

A somewhat polarizing wine for the group. Definitely on the ripe side with very good concentration. Toasty but the fruit carries the oak reasonably well. Just enough restraint so as not to be roasted, but it's close, and that makes this a not-so-subtle wine.

  • 2005 Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Very big and bold aromas of black cherry and meat. The palate packs so much power in a classy and restrained frame. The structure still needs time to soften and integrate, but its already silky in nature. Such a harmonious wine. Upside as this develops nuance.

  • 2009 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Aromas of non-delineated meaty ripe black cherry. Lots of fruit on the palate that is reasonably approachable in texture/body but not offering a of nuance or interest. Perhaps this gains that interest with time, but I'm not sure.

  • 2009 Gérard Raphet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Aromas of rich black cherry are made interesting with some emerging meat, herb and splice notes. Medium-to-full bodied with good balance and poise. Similar to the aromas, the complexity is just starting to show. Seems to be on the front-end of its drinking window. Already good with some upside.

  • 2009 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

09/10 pair. Incredible nose that is both intense and layered with stem-filled black cherry, smoked meat, toasted herbs and spice. The palate has Grand Cru concentration with delicious rich fruit and so many nooks/crannies of complexity. Wow, spice-led powerful finish. If served blind, I would have guessed this as the 2010 given its so complete and firing on all cylinders.

  • 2010 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

09/10 pair. Very big, rich and dense aromatics of sweet black cherry with savory spice. More ripe and rich and less nuanced than the 2010 today but it's stuffed with potential. Lots of upside from here.

  • 1996 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

A hard, tight and angular wine that is going nowhere. Not much pleasure to be found -- low 80s showing.

  • 1996 Domaine Trapet Latricières-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Enticing, layered nose of exotic spice-filled meaty black cherry. Yum, rich, plush and lightly sweet black cherry that is fresh and bright. In a great spot now. Only nit might be slightly less concentration then you'd like in a Grand Cru.

  • 2000 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Latricières-Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Full nose of mature, classic Gevrey notes of meaty, earthy black cherry with some earthen notes. Good complexity and development if a little lacking in punch, power and length. I'd drink up.

  • 2008 Camille Giroud Latricières-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

07/08 pair. More intriguing and with more upside potential than the 2008. There is a clear resemblance but the 08 has more brightness, lift and structural balance.

  • 2007 Camille Giroud Latricières-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

07/08 pair. Ripe, sweet fruit with lots of herb and dusty earth. Lush, round fruit with loads of licorice. Ready to go and at peak now.

  • 2002 Louis Jadot Latricières-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

02/05/10 vertical. Spicy, meaty, ripe black cherry nose. The palate has a lot of ripe and easy-drinking black cherry fruit. Seamless and fully ready-to-go. Drink now.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Latricières-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

02/05/10 vertical. A bruiser of wine with full, dense, sweet black cherry fruit that while rich and providing a modicum of pleasure is still just too structured and firm. Needs another decade. 92-93+ point potential.

  • 2010 Louis Jadot Latricières-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

02/05/10 vertical. Gorgeous, powerful, intense and layered nose with so much meaty spice. This screams Grand Cru Gevrey with deep, concentrated meaty black cherry fruit. Pure and lifted. Great combo of power and elegance. Long finish. Clearly the best in the flight (now and for its potential) and wine of the tasting, edging out the Dujac 09/10 Aux Combottes pair.
